BOULDER - The University of Colorado soccer team released its spring schedule on Friday, which features five home matches and two day/night doubleheaders.
Colorado opens its schedule hosting Colorado Mines on Friday, Feb. 20 in Boulder at the indoor bubble. The Orediggers are one of three Division II schools CU will face this spring. The match is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff. Colorado Mines is coming off its most successful postseason run in program history where the team advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 DII NCAA Tournament last December.
Next up for the Buffaloes, is their first doubleheader on Saturday, March 7, which features a trip to Denver to face the Pioneers at 9 a.m. and then CU returns home to battle Wyoming at 7 p.m. at the indoor bubble. Colorado holds a 10-8-1 regular season lead over Denver and is 9-2-1 all-time against the Cowgirls. Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez spent four seasons as head coach of Wyoming before taking over for the Buffs after the 2011 season.
CU continues its spring play a few weeks later in the Regis University Tournament. The tournament takes place on the Rangers' campus in Denver as the Buffs' first match kicks off on Saturday, April 4 against the Northern Colorado Bears. The contest will be the first of two meetings between the Buffs and Bears this spring. In regular season competition, Colorado boasts a perfect 8-0 record against the Bears and has never allowed a goal in the series, shutting out its in-state foe in eight straight meetings. Last spring, CU continued its dominance over UNC, defeating the Bears 3-0 at home. Colorado finishes the day with two split squad matches against DII opponents Colorado Mesa and Western State.
The Buffaloes return home on Sunday, April 12 for their final doubleheader. Colorado will battle Air Force on Prentup Field for the afternoon match (2 p.m.) and then moves to Folsom Field to play under the lights against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. In its spring match last season, CU earned a 3-0 victory over the Falcons. The Buffs are an impressive 5-1 all-time when they face Air Force during the regular season and are undefeated, posting a 4-0 record at home in those matches.
Colorado concludes the season by welcoming back former Big 12 rival Nebraska on Saturday, April 18 at Prentup Field. It is the second straight spring the two teams will square off on the pitch. Prior to the 2014 spring season, the Buffs and Cornhuskers had not met since both programs left the Big 12 after the 2010 season. CU tied NU 1-1 in Lincoln, Neb. last spring.
The Buffs were unbeaten last year during its spring matches. They finished with a 6-0-2 record and improved to a stellar 19-1-3 mark in spring play under Sanchez.
