Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week

SAN FRANCISCO - STANFORD junior Maciek Romanowicz and USC junior Giuliana Olmos were named the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for play from Feb. 16-22, the Conference office announced today.

Romanowicz (Warsaw, Poland) outlasted J.T. Nishimura in a three-set win at the No. 4 spot to clinch Stanford’s 4-3 come-from-behind upset of No. 14 California in Berkeley. It marked the fourth-straight win for Stanford, and the second-straight season that the Cardinal has upset the Golden Bears on the road. Romanowicz also posted a doubles victory with Tom Fawcett at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2 despite Stanford losing the doubles point. The Cardinal men are now 5-2 in dual play while Romanowicz holds a 5-8 overall singles record. 

Olmos (Fremont, Calif.) upset the nation’s top-ranked singles player, Maegan Manasse, in a three-set comeback effort that clinched a 4-3 win for No. 11 USC over No. 5 California in Berkeley. The junior posted a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Cal’s Manasse to help the Trojans climb out of a three-point hole and clinch the match. The next day, No. 22 Olmos pinned up a 6-0, 6-4 win over Saint Mary’s 48th-ranked Danielle Flores to help lift USC to a 5-2 victory over the Gaels. The wins improved USC to 10-1 overall while Olmos moves to a 24-7 overall singles record. 

Romanowicz’ honor is the first of his career and the 11th for the Stanford men. Olmos’ honor is the second of her career and the 32nd for the Trojan women. 

The Cardinal men host Hawaii this Tuesday, Feb. 24 before traveling for duals at USC on Friday, Feb. 27 and at UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 28.
