Hamilton's RBI Breaks Pitcher's Duel

March 14, 2015 | Baseball

PHOENIX – Caleb Hamilton singled home Joey Jansen with a two-out knock back up the box off ASU closer Ryan Burr to send the Oregon State baseball team to 1-0 victory over No. 12 Arizona State Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Jansen, pinch running for Michael Howard, who walked to open the inning, moved to second when Kyle Nobach reached on a throwing error. Two batters later, Hamilton battled, and sent a 3-2 pitch up the middle off Burr.

The RBI ended a pitcher's duel that lasted for eight innings. OSU starter Andrew Moore worked 7 1/3 scoreless innings, scattering seven hits and 1 one walk with three strikeouts. His counterpart, Seth Martinez, went eight full, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three.

OSU (15-3 overall, 1-0 Pac-12 Conference) ended the game with five hits by five different players. The Sun Devils (10-6, 0-1) tallied eight, with two coming from Trever Allen.

The Beavers twice got out of jams by playing flawless defense. Faced with a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning, Moore was able to start an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play by barehanding a suicide squeeze.

In the eighth, and with runners on first and third, ASU again try a squeeze, with reliever Luke Heimlich getting the second out of the inning. His job done after one batter faced, he was replaced by John Pomeroy, who got a groundout to short to get out of the inning.

The win went to Pomeroy, who picked up his first career victory after throwing just two pitches. The loss went to Darin Gillies, who walked Howard with one down in the ninth.

The teams continue their series Saturday with a 6:05 p.m. PT first pitch at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The game can be heard live on the Beaver Sports Network in addition to TuneIn and osubeavers.com.

Saturday's game and Sunday's finale (1:05 p.m.) will both air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
