CORVALLIS, Ore. – KJ Harrison's two-run home run opened the scoring and starter Andrew Moore worked into the ninth as No. 25 Oregon State defeated Washington State 5-2 in the Pac-12 series-opener Friday at Goss Stadium.

Moore retired the first eight batters and faced the minimum through five innings. He improved to 2-0 on the season as he allowed two runs on six hits over eight and 2/3 innings while striking out 10.

Oregon State opened the scoring in the third as Jeff Hendrix led off with a single then came home on Harrison's team-leading seventh home run of the season for the 2-0 lead. The Beavers added two more runs in the fifth, capitalizing on Trevor Morrison's leadoff single then three walks and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Logan Ice.

Washington State threatened in the sixth as it loaded the bases thanks to an infield hit from Derek Chapman, an error and a walk. Moore got out of it when Ian Sagdal flew out to the warning track in left to end the inning.

The Cougars found the scoreboard in the seventh as P.J. Jones and Shane Matheny opened the frame with back-to-back singles. One out later, Ben Roberts singled down the right field line, scoring Jones and moving Matheny to third. Roberts came home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chapman as the freshman beat a relay throw from second, cutting the Oregon State lead to 4-2.

Oregon State added an insurance run in the seventh as Kyle Nobach's two-out, RBI double scored Elliott Cary from second, pushing the lead to 5-2.

WSU starter Sean Hartnett (3-3), one of four Cougar pitchers on the night, suffered the loss as he allowed two runs on four hits in three and 2/3 innings.

Relief pitcher Luke Heimlich came on to retire the final out of the game for his second save of the season.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m.
