No. 5 Women's Tennis Downs No. 10 Stanford, 5-2

March 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - In a match that the Bruins certainly needed to win in order to stay in this year's Pac-12 title race, the fifth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team was able to down No. 10 Stanford, 5-2 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

UCLA (12-3; 2-1 Pac-12)  was able to grab the one point awarded for doubles play following victories at court Nos. 2 and 3. Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady picked up their second win in as many days at the No. 2 spot, as they downed 13th-ranked Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay, 8-0. Although Anderson and Brady are unranked, it wasn't much of an upset, as the Bruin duo was consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally all of last year before an injury to Brady sidelined her for much of this season. With one win in the books, UCLA clinched the point at court No. 3, where Chanelle Van Nguyen and Kristin Wiley downed Krista Hardebeck and Lindsey Kostas, 8-3. The Cardinal picked up their lone doubles victory at the No. 1 spot, winning the battle of top 5 teams when second-ranked Taylor Davidson and Carol Zhao beat third-ranked Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips, 8-3.

In singles play, UCLA was able to move out to a 2-0 lead when Harrison downed Hardebeck, 6-0, 6-3 at court No. 4. Although Stanford (9-3; 2-1 Pac-12) got on the board with a straight-set win at court No. 2, the Bruins soon enjoyed a 3-1 advantage when the second-ranked Anderson cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 3 Zhao at court No. 1.

Stanford cut the lead to 3-2 when Ellen Tsay notched a straight-set victory over Kaitlin Ray at the No. 5 spot. That was as close as the Cardinal would get, however, as Wiley clinched the win for the Bruins when she downed Kostas, 6-2, 6-1 at court No. 6.

With the match already decided, McPhillips added yet another win for the Bruins at court No. 3, where she downed Doyle, 6-2, 6-4.

UCLA hits the road for its next four matches beginning with Washington on March 27.
