No. 19 Men's Tennis Downs UNLV, 6-1

March 23, 2015 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - Playing its final non-conference match of the season on Monday, the No. 19 UCLA men's tennis team dispatched of visiting UNLV by a score of 6-1 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA (9-6) actually trailed Monday's match after dropping the doubles point with losses at court Nos. 1 and 3. With the Bruins' top doubles team of Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki not available for the match, UCLA was forced to shuffle its lineup. Dennis Mkrtchian and Austin Rapp were first off at court No. 2, where they beat Ruben Alberts and Jakob Amilon, 6-1. Unfortunately, the Rebels (9-5) stormed back to win the remaining two matches to claim the one point awarded for doubles play.

UCLA was able to shake off its slow start, eventually winning all six singles matches in straight sets to pull off the 6-1 win. Monday marked the first-ever match at court No. 1 for Mkrtchian, who is ranked No. 33 nationally, as he downed Ace Matias, 7-6(6), 6-4.

UCLA continues Pac-12 play at home this weekend, hosting Oregon and Washington on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Friday's match with the Ducks begins at Noon and will be carried live by the Pac-12 Networks (singles only beginning at 1:00 p.m.).
