Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week

SAN FRANCISCO - STANFORD senior John Morrissey and UCLA senior Robin Anderson were named the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for play from Apr. 6-12, the Conference office announced today.

Morrissey (Dublin, Ireland) won all three of his singles matches as Stanford went undefeated on the week, including the final two against ranked opponents. The senior highlighted his week with a dual-clinching match against No. 19 Roberto Quiroz of USC, scoring 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 6-3, to give Stanford a 4-3 win over the Trojans. It was the first victory over USC for the Cardinal since Feb. 19, 2011, spanning 10 attempts. Morrissey also had a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over No. 119 Martin Redlicki of UCLA to help Stanford to a 4-3 victory over UCLA, marking the first sweep of the SoCal schools since 2009. With the two wins, Stanford clinched at least a share of the Pac-12 title.

Anderson (Matawan, N.J.) won all of her singles and doubles matches this week to help No. 4 UCLA to a pair of Pac-12 shutouts over both Colorado and Utah. Against Colorado on Friday, Anderson, who is the nation’s top-ranked singles player, downed Tina Bokhua, 6-0, 6-1 in singles. She also teamed with sophomore Jennifer Brady at the top spot in doubles, downing Bokhua and Julyette Steur, 8-1. Anderson was nearly as dominant on Saturday against Utah, defeating No. 57 Tereza Bekerova, 6-4, 6-1 in singles and also posting an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, where she and Brady downed Bekerova and Margo Pletcher, 8-5. Anderson and Brady are currently ranked No. 19 nationally in doubles.

It marks the first-career weekly selection for Morrissey and the 12th all-time men’s selection for Stanford. It is the third-career weekly honor for Anderson and the 14th all-time women’s selection for UCLA.

Both teams wrap up the regular season this week, with the Stanford men hosting a non-conference matchup against San Francisco on Tuesday, Apr. 14 before hosting Cal on Saturday. The UCLA women play at USC on Thursday, Apr. 16.
