Kaprielian and Paul win weekly honors

SAN FRANCISCO-- James Kaprielian of UCLA and his combined no-hitter and CALIFORNIA's Chris Paul and .700 average earned the duo Pac-12 Pitcher and Player of the Week honors. Kaprelian was also named one of Collegiate Baseball's national players of the week on Monday.

Kaprielian (Tustin, Calif.) combined with David Berg for a 10-inning no-hitter over Arizona, the first no-no in UCLA history and first extra-inning no-hitter in the Pac-12 since 1978 (since 2004, the NCAA noted the only other extra-inning no-hitter thrown was by Lehigh in 11 innings this year). Kaprielian struck out 11 over the first 9.0 innings as the Bruins scored in the tenth to win the opener, 1-0. At one point, he retired 14 in a row. Dropping his ERA to 1.94 on the season, the projected first-round pick in the June Draft has thrown 23.2 consecutive scoreless innings. He is the current Pac-12 leader in wins (9-4) and is third in the Pac-12 in ERA to conference leader, Berg (0.79 ERA).

Paul (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) put the Bears on his back this past weekend in the series win over USC, driving in nine runs and going 7-for-10 with three doubles. After two hits and an RBI in the Saturday loss, Paul drove in three including the go-ahead run in the seventh to even the series. On Monday night, he drove in five with RBIs in the third, fifth and sixth as a part of a three-hit evening. Paul is hitting a team-high .335 with 42 RBIs and eight homers.

UCLA won its third Pac-12 title in five seasons this past weekend. One weekend remains in the regular season before the NCAA Regionals are announced on Memorial Day at 9 a.m. on ESPN.
