Buffs Dominate New Mexico, Win 4-0

August 30, 2015 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team recorded its second clean sheet of the season in dominant fashion on Sunday, defeating New Mexico 4-0 at Prentup Field.

The Buffaloes improved to 2-1-1 overall and New Mexico dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Colorado, eager to bounce back from a tough defeat on Friday and finish the weekend on a high note were led by newcomers Danica Evans and Stephanie Zuniga-Herrera as the duo tallied their first goals of their CU careers. Sophomore Joss Orejel also scored her first as a Buff and forward Brittney Stark punched in her first of the 2015 campaign.

The Buffs took an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, which proved to be just the start of a strong offensive performance for the black and gold. Colorado's four goals is tied for ninth most all-time in a single-match. Evans found the back of the net when senior Olivia Pappalardo, positioned near the right sideline chipped her pass into the box and Evans beat charging New Mexico goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich and multiple defenders to tap it in.

"It gave us more energy and it made us more positive knowing that we had an early goal and went up one to zero," said Evans.

CU outshot the Lobos 19-12 in the contest and converted on another scoring opportunity minutes before the half ended. This time, Zuniga-Herrera stepped up to give CU a two-goal advantage off a double-assist by Stark and senior Emily Paxton. The freshman from Pinole, Calif. received the pass five yards in front of New Mexico's goal, made a quick step around Ulrich and finished with a shot into the right corner.

Head coach Danny Sanchez used a variety of players off the bench—11 total, helping keep legs fresh after a quick turnaround from Friday's match at Brigham Young. The group combined for an impressive two goals, two assists and eight shots with four on frame.

"We have some depth," said Sanchez. "And Sunday's whatever the game is, you are going to need depth. I was very pleased with the players that came off the bench and gave us good energy."

The Buffs, didn't let up in the second half as they added two more goals before the day was over and their defense held the Lobos to six shots en route to the shutout. Redshirt freshman Scout Watson replaced starter Kate Scheele in goal after halftime and was credited with one save, her first save of her career. Scheele made three saves in the first half.

"We played a lot of players in the back, and anytime you get a shutout, you're pleased," Sanchez added. "Sometimes you give up one shot early in the game and it goes in. I thought we were pretty solid back there, especially the ones that came off the bench."

Colorado's third goal came after a flip throw from Evans. Deep in New Mexico territory, Evans' throw found freshman Sarah Kinzner on the near post. Kinzner flicked it to Orejel on the far post to head it in and give CU a 3-0 lead at the 53:23 mark.

"At halftime it was two to nothing, but we needed to find the next goal," said Sanchez. "We came out with good intensity in the second half. I was pleased with how we kept the pressure on and we scored some good goals."

Stark joined in on the scoring frenzy in the 74th minute to cap-off an impressive afternoon for the Buffs' attack. The build-up started when Stark made a perfect cross to a wide-open Brie Hooks. When Hooks' shot bounced off a Lobo defender, Stark followed the rebound and cleaned it up, lifting CU to a comfortable 4-0 lead and on its way to the victory.

The Buffaloes are now 2-0-1 all-time against the Lobos.

Colorado returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m. MDT to host Cincinnati on Club Soccer Awareness Day. Youth leagues are encouraged to attend the match for an opportunity to promote their teams at Prentup Field. CU then closes the weekend against former Big-12 foe Iowa State on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. MDT.
