Pac-12 Women's Soccer Faces Tough Competition In Week Three

Sep 1, 2015

NSCAA Poll | Soccer America Poll

• Pac-12 women's soccer teams continue to roll through the non-conference schedule. So far, the league has a 26-9-2 record and 11 of the 12 teams are currently on a winning streak. But, week three will be a test for the league as there are seven matchups against top-25 opponents, including No. 14 UCLA who faces No. 1 Virginia. That match will be televised on the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles. It is set to start at 7 p.m. PT on Sept. 4 in Los Angeles, Calif.

• Four Pac-12 teams are ranked in the NSCAA poll this week. STANFORD jumped up one spot to No. 2 spot while UCLA is at No. 14. USC climbed two spots to 15th overall and ARIZONA STATE is 24th. CALIFORNIA, WASHINGTON STATE, ARIZONA and WASHINGTON also received votes.

• The Conference office announced the Pac-12 Women's Soccer Players of the Week for action from Aug. 24-30. CALIFORNIA’s Celeste Boureille took home Offensive Player of the Week, while UCLA’s Gabbi Miranda was voted Defensive Player of the Week and OREGON STATE’s Bella Geist was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Week.

• Arizona, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona State and Stanford all remain undefeated through two weeks of competition. Combined, they have scored 40 goals and surrendered seven. Arizona leads with 10 goals scored while Arizona State is the only team who has yet to concede a goal.

• Bad weather has been the cause of two cancellations for Pac-12 women's soccer matches in this non-conference season. Stanford's match against BYU on Aug. 24 in Honolulu was cancelled because of poor weather and field conditions. ASU was scheduled to play San Diego State in Tempe on Aug. 31 but their match was also cancelled for the same reasons. However, BYU and Stanford have rescheduled the match and it will take place on Monday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. PT in Palo Alto, Calif.

• Beijing Normal University scheduled two friendly matches against Pac-12 opponents. Their tour was part of the Conference's overall Globalization Initiative, which provides transformative educational and cultural experiences for the student-athletes as they compete against Chinese counterparts. Arizona State and California both hosted Beijing Normal University last week.

National recognition has already started to pour in as two athletes from the Conference were named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s DI Team of the Week for Aug. 21-23. Oregon State's Geist and forward Allison Pantuso earned recognition for their part in the Beavers’ 2-1 overtime victory over Portland. For the Aug. 24-30 D1 Team of the Week, Greta Espinoza, also of Oregon State, was an honorable mention honoree. Also, Miranda's goal for UCLA is a nominee for Top Drawer Soccer's College Goal of the Week.

Twenty-eight players from around the country have been marked as potential contenders for the 2015 Missouri Athletic Club’s (MAC) Hermann Trophy. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The Pac-12 has three representatives on the list, Stanford senior Jane Campbell,  Stanford sophomore Andi Sullivan, the 2014 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and UCLA senior Taylor Smith.

• For the fourth straight year, the countdown of Pac-12 Networks’ 850 live event telecasts will begin on the pitch with a 69-game women’s soccer schedule that also features 24 non-conference matchups. Of the 24 non-conference televised games, 12 matchups pit Pac-12 teams against 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. Each Pac-12 team will appear on the Networks at least six times (home or away) in 2015.
