Buffs Defeat Iowa State 2-1 In Overtime

September 06, 2015 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team won its third straight match on Sunday afternoon, defeating Iowa State 2-1 in overtime at Prentup Field.

The Buffaloes fell behind early after an Iowa State goal in just the fourth minute. Midfielder Haley Albert sent a ball past CU's back line and forward Koree Willer had a clean look to send her shot top shelf and give the Cyclones the 1-0 advantage.

"Iowa State is a very well coached team," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "I have a lot of respect for [head coach] Tony [Minatta] and what he's doing with the program. We knew it was going to be a battle today. We gave up the early goal, but I felt really it was some of the best soccer we've played. We dug ourselves a hole, but I was pleased with how we responded."

Colorado and Iowa State were even in the shots column at halftime with seven each, but the Buffs continued to play with a relentless attack and outshot their former Big 12 foe 12-3 in the second half and 21-10 for the match.

CU's offense eventually broke through in the 82nd minute, scoring the equalizer and forcing overtime for the second time this year. Junior Brie Hooks had possession in the right corner. She sent a booming kick toward Iowa State goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon who came off her line to make the initial save, however the ball bounced off her hands and junior Danica Evans cleaned it up on the far side. For Evans, it was her second goal this year and Hooks' team-leading third assist.

"It feels so good," Evans said about scoring the tying goal. "We all pressed as a team and we all worked hard so I think it was a good win for us."

Evans had a team-high five shots with three on goal and Hooks put two of her four shots on frame. Goalkeeper Kate Scheele only faced three shots and made two saves.

"The second half when we're chasing a goal it becomes a little bit helter-skelter," said Sanchez. "There's a little bit more urgency, a little bit more of players getting on players, but I was happy with how we responded and I was really happy with our fitness. I felt we were really taking the game to them in the last 20 minutes and of course we got the equalizer and in overtime, I think it was coming."

With the match tied 1-1, the Cyclones and Buffaloes headed to overtime and it didn't take long for CU to notch the game-winner. Freshman Erin Greening was taken down inside Iowa State's box. The official blew his whistle to call the foul and award the Buffaloes the penalty kick. Hooks stepped up and drilled her first penalty kick of her career into the left corner, lifting CU to the 2-1 victory in the match's 95th minute.

Hooks now has 19 career goals, which is sixth most all-time in program history and her 12 career assists ranks tied for fifth in the CU record book.

The Buffaloes improved to 4-1-1 overall and snapped Iowa State's two-game winning streak as the Cyclones fall to 4-2-0 on the season. Colorado is now 13-2-1 all-time against ISU, including a perfect 10-0 when playing at home.

"I think Iowa State is a team that's going to win a lot of games this year so we need quality wins and I think when it comes November this is going to be a quality win so we're pleased to get it especially at home," Sanchez added. "We had great support today and it's something to build off of."

Next up for the black and gold, a trip to Denver to face in-state rival University of Denver on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The Buffaloes then return home to host the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. and the contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Fans attending Sunday will receive an eco-friendly, reusable CU tote bag to help support CU's green initiative.
