DAVIS, Calif. -- A strong first period on defense helped the Cal men's water polo team build a lead and the offense took over from there as the No. 3 ranked Bears added on in the third and fourth periods to beat No. 12 UC Davis 16-7 on Sunday.

Cal (5-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period thanks to a defense that kept the pressure off the Bears' goal. Goalkeeper Lazar Andric needed to make just two saves in the first eight minutes and that translated to four goals on the other end with Colin Mulcahy, Odysseas Masmanidis, Thomas Carroll and Nicholas Carniglia all finding the net to put Cal ahead.

A quiet second period for both teams resulted in UC Davis (3-3) closing the gap a bit, but Cal still held a 5-2 lead midway through the match. That's when the Bears turned the offense on, and Masmanidis was right in the middle of the action. The freshman from Athens, Greece scored twice in the third and once more in the fourth to finish with a match-high five goals. Fellow freshman Johnny Hooper also scored three goals over the final two periods, helping the Bears maintain a comfortable lead to the end.

10 different Bears scored Sunday as Chandler Jarrels, Farrel South, Pedro Stellet, Luca Cupido and Timothy Simenc also landed on the final scoresheet. Andric finished with six saves in goal. Sean Grab and Brock Gordon each scored two goals to lead UC Davis.

Cal now turns its attention to next weekend's Kap7 NorCal Invitational at Stanford. The Bears are seeded No.4 at the tournament and open play on Saturday at 10:50 a.m. against No. 13 seed San Jose State. The winner of that match will play the winner of the UC Santa Barbara-Air Force match later in the day. The tournament concludes Sunday with semifinal and medal round matches.
