Pac-12 announces women's soccer players of the week
SAN FRANCISCO - The Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women's Soccer Players of the Week for action from Sept. 28-Oct. 4. STANFORD's Andi Sullivan took home Offensive Player of the Week honors, while WASHINGTON's McKenzie Karas was voted Defensive Player of the Week and UTAH's Lindsey Luke was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Week.
Sullivan (Lorton, Va.), the 2014 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and 2015 MAC Hermann watch list member, scored two impressive long-distance goals for the Cardinal last weekend. In the match against ARIZONA STATE on Friday, she scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute with a perfectly placed left-footed shot from 20 yards out. Stanford ended up beating the Sun Devils, 2-0. Against then-No. 17 Arizona, Sullivan shot again from outside the 18-yard box, this time with her right foot, and found the top corner of the net for the goal to give Stanford a 2-1 lead. The game went to the second overtime period and the Cardinal prevailed in the end, 3-2. Sullivan was vital in in Stanford’s possession of the ball, stringing together passes with her teammates and making long runs with the ball at her feet. It is her first career weekly honor and the 45th all-time for the Cardinal.
Karas (Las Vegas, Nev.) was instrumental in Washington’s weekend sweep against USC and UCLA last week. She blocked shots, cleared balls, stopped numerous counters and made many other plays as she helped lead the Huskies to a sweep they have accomplished just one other time in team history. Washington was able to beat UCLA 2-1, handing the Bruins their first Conference loss the 2012 season. It is Karas’ first career weekly accolade and the 24th all-time for Washington.
Luke (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) posted two shutouts last weekend against Oregon and Oregon State. Luke made three saves in the 1-0 victory over the Ducks. She was called to action six times against the Beavers and made all six saves. The goalkeeper now has four shutouts on the year and has helped the Utes capture their first 2-0-0 road weekend since joining the Pac-12. It was also the first time in two years that Utah has posted consecutive shutouts against league opponents. Luke takes home her second weekly honor of the year as she was previously named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week to open the 2015 season on Aug. 25. She has now earned seven of Utah’s nine weekly accolades since the Utes joined the Pac-12.
