Pac-12 to live stream regular season football in China on Letv Sports as part of multi-year agreement
Pac-12 Games are First Regular Season College Football Games Streamed in China
SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference and Letv Sports, a fast-growing sports media and technology subsidiary of Beijing-based streaming video giant Letv, announced today that as part of multi-year agreement, Letv Sports will stream Pac-12 regular season football games this season.
Letv Sports will provide coverage of Pac-12 events across multiple sports, including at least one football game from Pac-12 Networks each week for the remainder of the season. All Pac-12 football games streamed on Letv Sports will feature Chinese commentary in order to provide audiences in China with the best viewing experience possible. The full schedule of Pac-12 events on Letv Sports beyond the 12 football games will be announced at a November press conference in China.
The Pac-12 2015-16 football season on Letv Sports launched on October 3, marking the first two regular season college football games ever to be streamed in China: the Arizona Wildcats versus the Stanford Cardinal, and the Washington State Cougars versus the California Golden Bears. The season continues this weekend with the Cougars versus the Oregon Ducks and the Colorado Buffaloes taking on the Arizona Sate Sun Devils. Viewers in China will see the games live on Sunday, October 11 at 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively.
“We are excited to expand our partnership with Letv Sports and showcase Pac-12 football teams and student-athletes in China,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “As our universities continue to operate in an ever-changing globalized world, we see great opportunity to expand our content distribution to China as a way to showcase our academic and athletic excellence.”
Letv Sports, a free streaming platform for the Chinese Internet audience, will make the Pac-12 games available to its users on PCs, tablets, mobile devices, and Letv Super TVs. Letv Sports will also offer users on its platform access to Pac-12 highlights and other programming to be consumed on demand. Last year, Letv streamed 27 Pac-12 men’s basketball games to fans in China, including the 2015 Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
“Letv Sports is excited to expand collaboration with the Pac-12,” said Letv Sports CEO LEI Zhenjian. “Through the partnership between Letv Sports and Pac-12, we not only want to show the Chinese domestic audience the excitement of Pac-12 and NCAA basketball and football, but also want to provide more inspiration and successful examples to the Chinese domestic collegiate sports participants and administrators through our in-depth collaboration and exchange with U.S. collegiate sports.”
The expanded partnership represents another step forward in the Pac-12’s ongoing Global Initiative. The initiative is an unprecedented effort to showcase the Pac-12 and its member institutions in China through student-athlete exchanges and sport. In November, the Pac-12 will stage a regular season men’s basketball game in China between the University of Washington and the University of Texas, becoming the first major U.S. sports league, collegiate or professional, to host a regular season contest in China.
In conjunction with the game, the Pac-12 will host three educational expos to promote its member universities to the Chinese audience in Shanghai, Nantong and Suzhou. Also, an academic delegation from Pac-12 institutions will meet with education and government leaders in a symposium to explore further cooperative programs in sports, student and faculty exchange, research and academics.
