Buffs Fall To No. 21 Washington State, 3-0

October 11, 2015 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team fell to the 21st-ranked Washington State Cougars, 3-0 here on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.

Washington State took the early 1-0 lead when Kaitlyn Johnson earned the first goal of the match, and her sixth of the season, in the 15th minute of play. After a pass from Beau Bremer, Johnson found space inside the back post as the ball got by diving Colorado goalkeeper Scout Watson.

The Buffs had an opportunity a few seconds later, but the shot by senior Madi Krauser sailed just above the crossbar.

The Cougars would go up 2-0 in the 17th minute. Sofia Anker-Kofoed connected with Kourtney Guetlein over the top and she sent her shot inside the back post as well, very similar to how WSU scored its first goal.

In the final seconds of the first half the clock was stopped after a foul causing some confusion on the field. The Buffs worked hard in the two seconds they had left to get the ball in the goal, and though it touched the back of the net, it was waived off as officials ruled time expired before the ball crossed the goal line.

"If that was to have counted, I know the game would have completely changed," said Krauser.

In the second half, CU continued to do their best to attack the goal. They finished with a 20-9 shot advantage over the 90 minutes. Seven of those shots belonged to junior Brie Hooks, who led the team in that category and put five of her shots on target. Junior Danica Evans also put three of her four shots on frame.

"We had some good chances but we didn't have really quality opportunities where we really had to test their keeper," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez.

Washington State, on the counter in the 71st minute added their final goal.

The Buffs put a season-high 11 shots on goal and Hooks had a few close shots, but Washington State goalkeeper Ella Dederick was ready every time. Even in the final moments of the contest when Hooks took the free kick after Johnson received a yellow card, Dederick was there to make the save.

The Cougars only took four shots on goal, with three of those resulting in goals and Waston finished with one save.

"Look at the first half– two shots, two goals" said Sanchez.  There was nothing that Scout could have done about either one of them, but you can't dig yourself out of a hole."

The Buffaloes dropped to 7-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Pac-12 play. Washington State improves its season record to 11-2-0 (4-1-0 Pac-12).

"It's definitely frustrating because you obviously don't want to start out conference play this way," Krauser said. "It kind of just puts us in a bit of a tough spot. So we have some crucial wins now that we need to get on the road, against some good teams."

Colorado will begin a three-match road trip to the west coast on Friday, Oct. 16. The Buffs play at No. 6 Stanford (6 p.m. MDT) and the contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
