Ward's Goal Not Enough In 2-1 Loss On Senior Day

November 01, 2015 | Soccer

BOULDER - Colorado's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on Sunday to Arizona State at Prentup Field in the final home match of the season.

A slow start cost CU an early 1-0 deficit as Jessica Raybe scored for the Sun Devils in the seventh minute, drilling home a shot from 10 yards out in front of the left post.

The Buffs bounced back and played evenly with ASU throughout the rest of the half. Nikki Machalek had the best scoring chance in the 13th minute. She slid into a shot from the center of the box but pushed it just right of the net.

"It was disappointing to give up the early goal," head coach Danny Sanchez said. "Sometimes on Senior Day it is a little emotional, and I think we lost a little bit of focus. I thought the rest of the first half we played very well."

Most of the action was in the middle third of the field for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but things opened up after that. Brie Hooks had a 25-yard shot hit the crossbar in the 57th minute.

Two minutes later, the Sun Devils found the net for the second time in the match as McKenzie Berryhill headed in a short cross from Aly Moon in the 59th minute. Kate Scheele made the initial save on a shot from Berryhill, but could not control the rebound. Moon stayed with the play and flicked a soft, short cross to Berryhill as Scheele was out of the goal from the initial shot.

The Buffs finished strong, however, as they got within one score in the 74th minute. Alex Huynh's long free kick found the head of Heather Ward inside the 6-yard box. Ward buried the header for her second goal of the season, and a big score for the senior on Senior Day.

"(Being a defender) I don't get many opportunities to score so going out like that, that's definitely a high note for me and I'm really excited I was able to go out and get that goal today. That was really special for me personally."

Three minutes after Ward's goal, Hooks was stopped on a breakaway as the scoring chances continued for CU. The team's final shot on goal came in the match's final minute at Danica Evans tried to flick a shot past the ASU goalkeeper on a service into the box.

Scheele finished the match with a career-high nine saves, a strong performance her final appearance at Prentup.

"The tears are happy ones because I know that my class left a legacy and we made some amazing friends on this field and had some amazing moments with the coaching staff and each other," an emotional Scheele said after the game. "I think the tears and the sadness is more because we're going to miss being here and I'm proud of this program even though this season wasn't exactly how we wanted it to turn out."

The Buffs fell to 7-9-3 overall and 1-7-2 in the Pac-12 with the loss, while ASU moved to 8-8-1 and 4-5-1.

CU will wrap up the 2015 season at Utah on Friday at 2 p.m.
