Freshmen Lead Cougars to Victory Over Spartans

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Four players scored in double figures as the Washington State women's basketball team defeated San Jose State, 95-80, Friday night at Beasley Coliseum. The Cougars (5-0) were led by freshmen Borislava Hristova with a career-high 30 points and Alexys Swedlund with a career-high 16 points. WSU is off to its best start since the 1998-99 season, when they also started 5-0.

For the first time in her young collegiate career, Hristova scored 30 points, shooting 12-of-19 from the field. Hristova led all scorers in the game and was assisted by Swedlund (16 points), sophomore Louise Brown (12), and senior Dawnyelle Awa (11) in double-figure scoring. WSU's true freshmen of Hristova, Swedlund, and Maria Kostourkova scored a combined 52 points in the game.

Running against the fast-paced Spartans, Washington State shot 36-of-81 (.444) from the floor, their highest percentage of the season. The Cougars also pulled in 63 rebounds, tied for the most in school history. Senior Mariah Cooks led the way, grabbing 12 rebounds in the game. Fellow senior Taylor Edmondson dished out a career-high five assists.

In the opening quarter, Hristova led the Cougars, putting up 15 points in the opening 10 minutes. The teams combined to shoot 9-of-17 (.529) from beyond the arc, as WSU finished the opening period leading 28-24. After the Spartans tied the game early in the second quarter, WSU went on an 8-0 run to build a 36-28 lead. The Cougars maintained their advantage into halftime, entering the break leading, 46-39.

Returning from the locker room, SJSU fought to erase its deficit, scoring 10 unanswered points to cut the WSU lead to one point with five minutes to play in the third quarter. The Cougars responded, led by eight third-quarter points from Swedlund. Senior Mariah Cooks pulled in six rebounds in the third period, as WSU built an 11-point lead to end the quarter.

The Cougars played tough defense in the final quarter, limiting the Spartans to 6-of-21 (.286) from the floor. Hristova added 10 more points in the fourth period to reach the 30-point plateau. The Bulgarian native became just the second freshman in school history to score at least 30 points in a game, bested only by Lia Galdeira, who scored 33 points in her collegiate debut at Minnesota.

Washington State now starts a nine-day road trip, beginning with a matchup against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in Stillwater, Okla., Monday, Nov. 30, at 5 p.m. CT/7 p.m. PT.
