Howard Sparks Comeback Win

LOS ANGELES – Behind a career-high 22 kills from senior Brittany Howard, the sixth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team spoiled No. 13 UCLA's Senior Night with a 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11 come-from-behind victory, Friday, at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

The Cardinal (22-6) finishes Pac-12 play in third place with a 16-4 conference record. It is the first time in 30 years in which Stanford has finished third in Pac-12 play. Previously, the Cardinal had placed first or second in the conference in 27 out of 29 seasons.

Howard, along with her fellow seniors Madi Bugg and Jordan Burgess, finish their careers 7-0 against UCLA in Pac-12 play. Howard registered the first 20-plus kill match of her career, hitting .404 with just one attack error. Freshman opposite Hayley Hodson added 21 kills and 13 digs for her 12th double-double of the year.

Bugg controlled the offense, which out hit UCLA .283 to .211, with a season-best 60 assists (one shy of her career high). She also collected 13 digs and four blocks, posting her 12th double-double of the season. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Merete Lutz finished with 17 kills, including match points, on a .394 hitting percentage and five blocks.

Burgess tied her season-high with 18 digs, while freshman libero Halland McKenna tallied her third 20-plus dig performance of the season (20).

Jordan Anderson and Claire Felix paced the Bruins with 16 kills apiece. Junior libero Taylor Formico recorded a match-high 24 digs for UCLA.

Stanford returns to The Farm to await its postseason fate as the NCAA selection show airs on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. PT on ESPNU. Should the Cardinal host the first and second rounds, they would take place on Thursday, Dec. 3 and Friday, Dec. 4 at Maples Pavilion.
