Poeltl picks up second Pac-12 player of the week award of season

SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore Jakob Poeltl averaged a double-double in a pair of UTAH wins, including his sixth of the season in an upset of No. 7 Duke, to earn the Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award, as voted upon by media who cover the conference, for the second time this season.

Also elected Pac-12 Player of the Week on Nov. 23, the 7-0 forward/center from Vienna, Austria averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in just 24.0 minutes during the Utes’ two victories last week.

Poeltl made 5-of-7 shots en route to 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 20 minutes as Utah rolled to a 99-53 victory over Savannah State on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 77-75 overtime triumph versus Duke, Poeltl went 8-of-11 from the field and scored 19 points while adding a career-high 14 rebounds and three blocks in 28 minutes as Utah secured the Pac-12’s seventh Top 25 triumph this season.  He set the tone early by scoring eight of his team’s first 10 points, then helped the Utes clinch with two blocks to keep the game tied over the final 1:26 of regulation along with four points and three boards in overtime.

The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award nominee is in the top 10 nationally in field goal percentage (4th, .699) and double-doubles (9th).  He leads the Pac-12 with his 69.9 percent shooting and ranks second in scoring (19.1 ppg), fourth in rebounding (9.5 rpg) and sixth in blocked shots (2.2 bpg).
