Pac-12 announces weekly gymnastics honors

Jan 12, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO – Today the Pac-12 Conference office announced the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Jan. 5 – Jan. 11. STANFORD’s Elizabeth Price was named the Gymnast of the Week, UTAH’s Sabrina Schwab was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the Week, and UCLA’s Hallie Mossett was voted Specialist of the Week.

Stanford sophomore Elizabeth Price earned Gymnast of the Week honors for the first time in her career after her performance in the Cardinal’s second place finish at the NorCal Classic featuring CALIFORNIA, San Jose State, UC- Davis, and Sacramento State on Jan. 10.

Despite Stanford’s second-place finish, Price swept individual event victories, finishing first in all four events and the all-around. Her meet-best performance on beam was crucial with the Cardinal missing two routines in the event and needing a big score. It was the second beam performance of her career. This was also only the second time Price has competed in the all-around in her career; she’s earned the individual victory both times.

Her 39.500 all-around score also has her tied for best in the nation so far this season. In her freshman season, Price was named the 2015 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year and won an NCAA individual championship on the vault.

Utah freshman Sabrina Schwab earned Freshman/Newcomer of the Week honors for her performance in the Red Rocks’ season-opening win over BYU. In her first college appearance, Sabrina Schwab wowed a crowd of 15,023 while winning the floor exercise with a score of 9.90.

Schwab was not scheduled to compete to count and was slated to go exhibition until the touch warm-up just prior to the event. She scored her 9.90 on the floor from the No. 2 position in the lineup, and also scored a 9.75 on bars.

UCLA junior Hallie Mossett earned Specialist of the Week honors for her performance in the Bruins’ win over then-No. 3 Alabama. This is Mossett’s first Pac-12 weekly honor since she was named Freshman/Newcomer of the Week twice in 2014.

Mossett scored a career-high 9.95 on floor to help lead UCLA to a come-from-behind win over the Crimson Tide. UCLA trailed Alabama by .05 going into the final rotation, and Mossett stepped up and delivered her best floor routine of her UCLA career just when her team needed it. She earned a 10.0 from one judge and a final score of 9.95, shattering her previous career-high of 9.875 and giving her a first-place finish, the first win of her career on floor. Her score helped the Bruins total 49.475 on floor, tied for the second-highest floor score in the nation so far this season.

A gymnast of the week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008 and Freshman/Newcomer of the Week was added in 2013.
