Pac-12 All-Century Women's Gymnastics team announced
UCLA Bruins sweep Player and Gymnast of the Century honors
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (February 2, 2016) – Decorated Olympians and national champions filled the Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics all-century team, which was announced Monday night on ‘Pac-12 Sports Report.’
The Bruins dominate the team with 12 selections, in addition to Gymnast and Coach of the Century titles. Gymnasts from Oregon State (1), Arizona State (1) and Stanford (1) were also named to the team.
In the sixteen-gymnast roster, four different decades are represented. Seven all-century team members have competed in the Olympics, winning a total of 5 medals (2 silver, 3 bronze). Additionally, all 16 gymnasts have won at least one NCAA/AIAW individual championship, winning a total of 36 NCAA individual titles.
Current UCLA women’s gymnastics head coach Valorie Kondos Field was named Coach of the Century, and Tasha Schwikert as Gymnast of the Century.
Kondos Field has been with the Bruins as a head coach since 1991. She coached UCLA to six NCAA titles (1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2010), and is a four-time NACGC/W National Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 2000, 2001) and four-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year (1995, 2000, 2003, 2012). She has won 12 Pac-12 titles and 17 Regional titles, and UCLA gymnasts have won 27 NCAA individual titles since she has been head coach. She owns an overall regular season record of 468-109-2, and was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010, becoming just the second active head coach ever to be inducted.
From 2005 to 2008, Schwikert was a member of the UCLA Bruins gymnastics team. As a freshman, Schwikert won the NCAA National all-around title. At the 2008 NCAA National Championships, she won her second all-around title and placed first on uneven bars, second on floor, and eighth on vault. Prior to UCLA, Schwikert was a member of the 2000 Olympic Team where she helped Team USA win bronze. She was also the 2004 Olympic Alternate for Team USA. In all, Schwikert is a two-time NCAA all-around champion (2005, 2008), 2008 NCAA bars champion and a 12-time All-American (2005 all-around, vault, bars, beam, floor; 2007 all-around, vault, bars; 2008 all-around, vault, bars, floor). In 2008, she became the first UCLA gymnast and only the seventh woman ever to win multiple NCAA all-around titles.
