Pac-12 announces weekly gymnastics honors

Feb 2, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO – Today the Pac-12 Conference office announced the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Jan. 26 – Feb. 1. CALIFORNIA’s Toni-Ann Williams was named the Gymnast of the Week, STANFORD’s Ivana Hong was voted Specialist of the Week, and UTAH’s Sabrina Schwab was named the Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.

California sophomore Toni-Ann Williams earned Gymnast of the Week honors for the first time this season for leading the Golden Bears to their first victory over No. 5 UCLA since 1985. Williams won the all-around with a score of 39.250 and also came in first on the vault and the floor. Williams’ 9.875 on the vault and 9.675 on the beam were both season-highs for her. Williams helped No. 21 California to season-high total scores on three of four events and a season-best 196.375 overall team score.

Last season, Williams was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. She was last named Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 16, 2015 and was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week six times during the 2015 season.

Stanford senior Ivana Hong earned Specialist of the Week honors for her performance in the Cardinal’s fourth-place finish at the Metroplex Challenge. Hong tied for fifth on bars and won the beam title in a field that included four top-16 ranked squads. Her performance in the third position on beam came immediately after the gymnast before her fell. Hong followed the missed routine with a meet-best performance that helped Stanford finish the rotation with the highest beam score of any team at the meet (49.300). Her performance on bars helped No. 12 Stanford complete a solid third rotation after a tough start on floor and vault. Hong has scored 9.775 or higher on bars in all four performances this season.

Utah freshman Sabrina Schwab earned Freshman/Newcomer of the Week honors for the second time this season for her performance in the Red Rocks’ 197.150 - 194.850 win over No. 20 Arizona. Schwab tied or set career-highs in both of her routines, scoring a 9.95 and coming in second on the floor and scoring a fourth-place 9.875 on the bars. Schwab’s floor routine marked a new career-high and her bars routine tied her career-mark. Her scores contributed significantly to No. 7 Utah’s highest all-around team score of the season.

A gymnast of the week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008 and Freshman/Newcomer of the Week was added in 2013.
