Pac-12 Teams Tabbed in NCAA’s Top 10

For the first time ever, the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Sport Committee announced its top-10 rankings on Monday and three Pac-12 teams were included, the most for any conference in the country. Boasting the No. 1 RPI league in the country, ARIZONA STATE was tabbed at No. 7, followed  by No. 8 OREGON STATE and No. 10 UCLA ... Four Pac-12 teams are in the top 10 in the RPI as of Feb. 2, and five are in the top 16. Eleven of the 12 teams are in the top 100 ... After a big top-10 clash between ASU and OSU on Monday night, the Conference has a tie at the top of the standings ... Five teams continue to be ranked in the Associated Press poll, and four are in this week’s USA Today/WBCA Coaches poll. OSU and ASU remain in the top 10 in both polls again, UCLA and STANFORD are in the top 15 in the AP polling, while the Bruins are just out of the top 10 in the coaches poll at No. 16. WASHINGTON edged up to No. 24 in the writers’ poll ... A pair of rivalry series highlight this week’s games as CALIFORNIA and Stanford participate in the Battle of the Bay. UTAH and COLORADO go head-to-head twice this week, as well. Under the direction of first-year head coach Lynne Roberts, the Utes have seen major improvement this season already, earning more overall and Conference wins than all of last season with still eight regular-season games left on the schedule ... Stanford’s Lili Thompson was voted the Pac-12 Player of the Week after leading the Cardinal to a pair of victories last week. She was also tabbed ESPNW National Player of the Week ... OREGON’s Maite Cazorla was selected the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. The country’s assists leader among freshmen, she averaged 20 points per game, in addition to 6.5 assists per game in two games last week. The Ducks have also won more game this season than all of last year.

January was the month of upset with nine Pac-12 teams posting underdog wins, based on Associated Press rankings, further highlighting the strength of Pac-12 teams this season. Oregon State set the tone for February, posting the slight upset over Arizona State on the first of the month. The Pac-12 has the No. 1 RPI in the country with four teams in the top 10, the most for any conference in the nation. Six are also in the top 20 RPI (as of Feb. 2). Below is a list of Conference upsets from this season. Rankings are at the time of the meeting:

On Jan. 31, two Pac-12 standouts each reached 2,000 career points. WASHINGTON’s Kelsey Plum needed only 88 games to reach 2,000 career points, becoming the fastest player to reach the milestone in Conference history. Alleyne also hit the mark, becoming the 10th player in the NCAA to total 2,000 career points and 1,500 career rebounds.

Five Pac-12 teams are ranked this week in the Associated Press poll and four in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches poll. The Conference has a team ranked as high as No. 8 in both polls with ARIZONA STATE grabbing the spot in the AP polling and OREGON STATE earning that ranking by the coaches. WASHINGTON climbed one spot to No. 24 in the AP poll for the first time since 2003. Five league teams were ranked in the AP poll from the week of Nov. 30 to the week of Jan. 11, it was the longest stretch of that many Pac-12 teams ranked in league history. Prior to that, five teams had been ranked in the AP on Nov. 13, 2006 for two weeks. It is the ninth week this season five teams are in the AP polling.

NCAA Selection Committee Top 10
For the first time ever, the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Sport Committee provided a sneak peek in regard to their current thought process on Feb. 1, providing the first of three February top-10 rankings in seed order. Boasting the No. 1 RPI in the country, the Pac-12 teams had three teams in the top 10, the most for any league in the country, with ARIZONA STATE coming in at No. 7, followed  by No. 8 OREGON STATE and No. 10 UCLA. The Committee will reveal future top 10s on Feb. 15 and Feb. 29.

The Pac-12 concluded non-conference play with the top RPI in the nation. The Conference’s 79.7 winning percentage in non-conference regular-season play is the top mark since the league sponsored the sport in 1986-87 ... Now in league play, the Conference owns the top RPI in the country at .6042, according to the NCAA index. Five Pac-12 teams land in the top 20, four ranking in the top 10, the most of any conference in the country  ... Of the 17 women averaging double-doubles in the nation, the Pac-12 is the only league with three players achieving the feat including Alleyne, WASHINGTON’s Chantel Osahor and UTAH’s Emily Potter ... The Sun Devils tied its most-consecutive wins in program history at 15 ... OREGON STATE is one of three teams in the nation with three 1,000+ active point scorers (Hamblin, Weisner, Wiese; UCONN, Southern Illinois)... In the sweep of the Washington schools, STANFORD’s Lili Thompson was named ESPNW Player of the Week. The junior guard went 22-of-35 from the field including 10-of-14 from the arc ... Arizona is hosting a special reception for cancer survivors on Sunday, the second-annual “Still Standing” reception. Survivors will be honored during a pregame celebration and at halftime. With eight regular-season game still left to be played, the Wildcats have already surpassed last year’s win total of 10 ... The Oregon Ducks have also surpassed last year’s win total of 13. The Ducks are also averaging nearly 10.0 points per game more than all of last year ... Also seeing vast improvements from last season is Utah. The Utes already have more overall wins and more Conference wins than all of last season. The Utes are under the direction of first-year head coach Lynne Roberts.

PAC-12 IN THE National Rankings
As of Feb. 2, WASHINGTON’s Kelsey Plum is averaging 27.0 points per game, the second-best average in the country. One of the most prolific scorers in Pac-12 history, the junior became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career points in Pac-12 history.

OREGON senior Jillian Alleyne has recorded double-doubles in the majority of the games she has played in her career, including 18 this season which is the most in the country. Alleyne also ranks third in the country averaging 13.7 rebounds per game.

Also posting stats in the top-10 in the country are Oregon State’s Jamie Weisner, Oregon’s Lexi Bando and Stanford’s Karlie Samuelson. Weisner is just behind Plum in free throw percentage, ranking eighth in the nation (88.9) while Plum in seventh (89.2). Bando and Samuelson are sixth and seventh in the country in three-point percentage, ranking sixth (45.9) and seventh (45.5), respectively.
