Pac-12 announces women's basketball players of the week
SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Feb. 1-7. OREGON STATE’s Jamie Weisner was voted the Pac-12 Player of the Week after leading her team to a tie for first in the Pac-12 and three wins on the week, while OREGON’s Maite Cazorla was selected the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second-straight week and third time this season.
Senior Jamie Weisner (Clarkston, Wash.) had an outstanding week to help the Beavers go 3-0, including a pair of wins over ranked opponents. Weisner scored 25 points on 9-for-10 shooting to help Oregon State earn a win over No. 8 Arizona State on Monday, giving the Sun Devils their first Conference loss of the season and the Beavers a tie for first place. She followed that up by scoring 21 points against No. 24 Washington on Friday, becoming the 61st player in Pac-12 history with 1,500 career points. Weisner also scored nine points and matched a team-high five assists as the Beavers defeated Washington State in a defensive struggle on Sunday. She averaged 18.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists over the three games, and knocked down 51.3 percent of her shots from the floor and was even better from long distance, hitting on 57.1 percent of her three-point attempts, including going a perfect 3-for-3 against ASU. The team’s leading scorer averaging 17.0 ppg, she also ranks 11th in the country with a 44.2 shooting percentage from the three-point line. It is the second-career weekly honor for Weisner and the 37th all-time for the Beavers.
Point guard Maite Cazorla (Las Palmas, Spain) led the Ducks to a pair of road wins shooting an impressive 53.3 percent from three-point distance and dishing out 4.5 assists per game over wins at Washington State and No. 24 Washington. She knocked down all four of her threes in the third quarter against WSU after not scoring at all in the first half, giving Oregon a 59-46 win. She was impactful again in UO’s comeback win over the Huskies, 75-63, scoring 11 points in the second half with three three-pointers. Over her last four games, Cazorla is averaging 17.8 points per game and is 12-of-22 from three. Cazorla has the highest assist average on the team and is second in the Conference at 6.0 per game. She also owns the highest assist average among all freshmen in the country. It is the third time this season Cazorla has won the weekly honor and it is the 13th all-time for the Oregon program.
A player of the week has been selected every week since 1986-87, the first year the Conference sponsored women’s sports. A freshman of the week was first selected in 2012-13. The Pac-12 Player and Freshman of the Week are voted on by a panel of media that regularly cover Pac-12 women’s basketball.
Oregon and Oregon State host Colorado and Utah this weekend, the Buffs visiting the Beavers first on Friday while the Utes visit the Ducks that day. The matchups switch up on Sunday to close out the week.
