Arizona's York finishes with flourish for Player of the Week nod

SAN FRANCISCOGabe York closed out his final home weekend with a flourish to provide ARIZONA momentum entering this week’s Pac-12 Conference Tournament and earn the final men’s basketball Player of the Week award of the 2015-16 season as voted upon by media who cover the league.

In victories over No. 25 CALIFORNIA and STANFORD, the senior from West Covina, Calif., went 17-of-28 from the field (.607) and 12-of-20 (.600) behind the three-point arc en route to averaging 25.5 points to garner his first career Player of the Week nod.

Against California on Thursday, he scored all of his 19 points in the second half, highlighted by a pair of three pointers inside the final minute including the game-winner with 19 seconds left, as Arizona closed the contest with an 11-0 run for a 64-61 victory.

Two days later against Stanford, York matched the McKale Center record for made threes in a game with nine and finished with a career-high 32 points to lead the Wildcats to a convincing 94-62 triumph. His nine trifectas were the most in a game in the Pac-12 this season and tied for the eighth-most in a contest in NCAA Division I this season.

York capped the regular season with a league-leading 88 three pointers at a 42.9 percent rate good for third in the conference.

With the victories, Arizona clinched the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in this week’s Pac-12 Tournament, joining outright regular-season champion and No. 1 seed OREGON, No. 2 UTAH and No. 3 California in advancing directly to the quarterfinals. The battle to decide which team earns the Pac-12’s automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament begins Wednesday at 12 noon PT from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
