Pac-12 announces weekly gymnastics honors

Mar 15, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO – Today the Pac-12 Conference announced the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of March 8 - 14. UTAH’s Breanna Hughes was named the Gymnast of the Week, CALIFORNIA’s Toni-Ann Williams was voted Specialist of the Week, and UTAH’s Sabrina Schwab was named the Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.

UTAH senior Breanna Hughes earned Gymnast of the Week honors for the first time this season after earning a perfect 10 on the floor in her final routine of her final regular-season appearance at UTAH’s Huntsman Center. Leading the Red Rocks to a 197.675-197.125 win over No. 8 Georgia, Hughes won on floor and also tied her career high of 39.650 to win the all-around. She placed second on bars with a 9.925 and third on vault with a 9.875. Hughes’ 39.650 all-around score is tied for 10th in school history. Her 9.85 on beam was especially valuable in UTAH’s victory as it came immediately after a teammate’s fall in an extremely close meet.

A gymnast from six of eight Pac-12 teams has now been named Gymnast of the Week this season, demonstrating the depth of the conference this year.

CALIFORNIA sophomore Toni-Ann Williams earned Specialist of the Week honors this week after posting two season-high scores en route to two event wins in CALIFORNIA’s win over UC Davis and Sacramento State last Friday. On floor, she scored her second 9.95 of the season and on bars she earned CALIFOR-NIA’s first 9.925 since she notched that score in March of 2015. Both scores helped the Golden Bears to top-three team totals in program history on bars and floor. Williams also tallied a 9.775 on vault.

UTAH freshman Sabrina Schwab earned Freshman / Newcomer of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after her performance in UTAH’s win over Georgia. Schwab scored a 9.925 on both of her events (bars and floor) to help Utah to a season-high 197.675 and a win in a very close meet with Georgia. Her floor routine from the fifth position helped Utah hold its lead after a teammate fell immediately before her. Her 9.925 on bars also tied her career high in that event.

A gymnast of the week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008 and Freshman/Newcomer of the Week was added in 2013.
