Arizona Perseveres Through Tough Round One

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women's golf team began play at the PING/ASU Invitational at the Karsten Golf Course on Friday. The Wildcats are currently tied for fourth place after 18 holes. The team carded a collective 288 (E) after the first round.

Senior Lindsey Weaver led the team Friday. Her two birdies led her to notch a 70 (-2) at the end of the day. She is currently holding seventh place.

Freshman Haley Moore came off the first tee strong, eventually ending with a 72 (E). This puts her in a tie for 12th place. Freshman Gigi Stoll and Jessica Vasilic had a similar round, both ending with a 73 (+1) to tie for 24th place. Sophomore Krystal Quihuis managed to catch up on the 17th hole, sinking a birdie to earn a 73 (+1) and also tie for 24th place.

In the individual competition, junior Wanasa Zhou carded a 79 (+7) after 18 holes. She is tied for 60th place.

"The ASU course is very scoreable which UCLA proved today," said head coach Laura Ianello. "We played some solid gof but look to improve the next two days. Lindsey Weaver led the way with a solid under par round and the other four played very consistent. I have a good feeling that we will come out strong tomorrow and make up some room on the leaderboard."

Arizona's round started strong, after six holes they were in front of the competition at four under par. The following ten holes saw the Wildcats sink twelve bogeys, which drove their score down. Freshman Haley Moore fell from first place early, when she was tied with UCLA's Bronte Law at two under par, to finish at even par. However, with a late rally and three birdies on the 17th hole, the Wildcats managed to finish even.

Arizona tees-off at 8 a.m. again Saturday. For live scoring of the PING/ASU Invitational, visit the GolfStat website at golfstatresults.com.
