Pac-12 outdoor track and field athletes of the week
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Pac-12 Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the week honors for the week of April 4-April 10:
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: COLBY GILBERT, WASHINGTON (So., Vancouver, Wash.). Senior Colby Gilbert joined a very select group of runners who have ever defeated Oregon’s 13-time NCAA Champion Edward Cheserek in a collegiate race, shocking the Hayward Field crowd with a sprint to the finish of the 5,000-meters at the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Ore. Gilbert’s time of 13:44.96 was the second-fastest in school history and the No. 4 time in the NCAA this season. The victory highlighted nine UW wins at the invitational which featured three ranked opponents, including the sixth-ranked Ducks. Gilbert is the second Husky in as many weeks to claim the Conference's men's track weekly honor.
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: SAGE WATSON, ARIZONA (So., Alberta, Canada). Sophomore Sage Watson recorded the fastest 400-meter hurdle time in the world this season, winning the event in a time of 55.45 at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz. She was also part of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished in first place with the 19th-best time in the country this year, clocking a 3:33.81. Her performance helped the Wildcats earn their first top-25 USTFCCCA ranking of the season, jumping up to No. 21 this week.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: PAU TONNESEN, ARIZONA (RS-Sr., Tempe, Ariz.). Senior Pau Tonnesen scored 7,993 points to win the decathlon at the Jim Click Multis Invitational last week. The score is the third-highest in the country. Tonnesen is the defending Pac-12 Champion in the event and the 2015 Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Year. He met the Olympic qualifying standard at last year’s NCAA Championships and will represent his home country of Spain in Rio this summer.
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: VALARIE ALLMAN, STANFORD (Jr., Longmont, Colo.). Defending Pac-12 discus champion Valarie Allman won the hammer and discus at the 122nd Big Meet, helping Stanford to a 114-48 victory in the dual over rival California in Berkeley. Allman set a lifetime best of more than four feet to win the hammer, moving up to No. 6 on Stanford’s all-time performers’ list with a toss of 189-1 (57.63m). Her winning throw of 184-2 (56.13m) in the discus would have placed her No. 10 among collegians this year, except that she had a longer throw earlier this season. This was Allman’s second Big Meet discus victory in as many years.
