UCLA Athletics/Washington State Athletics

SAN FRANCISCO - The Conference office announced today Trek Stemp of WASHINGTON STATE was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week and Griffin Canning of UCLA was tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the action during the week of April 11-17.

Stemp (Kennewick, Wash.), the first Cougar to earn Pac-12 Player of the Week honors since Derek Jones on April 2, 2012, helped Washington State to a series win over No. 9 Oregon State, taking games two and three from the Beavers. It marked WSU’s first series win against OSU since 2010 and first series win against a Top-10 team since 2012. Stemp posted a .692 batting average, slugged .769, scored four runs, drove in two and had multiple hits in all three games including a four-hit game in the Saturday finale. In the opener, Stemp tallied three hits and scored a run and followed up with two hits and a run scored in the game two win. In the rubber game, Stemp recorded four hits, his third 4-hit game of the season, and also scored twice and drove in two runs. He is second in the Pac-12 in hits and batting average and owns a .375 batting average in league play. This is Stemp's first-career weekly accolade and the 67th all-time for the Cougars, tied for the third-most in Conference history.

Canning (Coto de Caza, Calif.) started Friday night for UCLA in a road game at Washington and led the Bruins to a 1-0 victory. The sophomore threw a complete game shutout, allowing six hits while striking out 10 and walking just one. The complete game was his second consecutive, becoming the first UCLA player since Trevor Bauer in 2011 to throw consecutive complete games. The strikeout total was his second-highest of his career and brought his season total to 61, second-highest in the Pac-12. Canning held the Washington three and four hitters to an 0-for-8 night, with seven strikeouts. The right-hander earned his team-high fourth win and his first-career weekly honor. The honor is the 71st in UCLA program history.

UCLA hosts Oregon in a series starting on Thursday, April 21 in which all three games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks. Washington State hosts USC in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 22. The Pac-12 Networks full television information can be found here.
