Pac-12 announces softball players of the week

Utah Athletics / Washington Athletics

SAN FRANCISCO — The Pac-12 Conference office announced the softball weekly honors for play from Apr. 18-24. UTAH junior infielder Anissa Urtez was named player of the week, fellow Ute outfielder Ally Dickman was tabbed freshman of the week while WASHINGTON freshman pitcher Taran Alvelo was voted pitcher of the week.

Urtez (Long Beach, Calif.) led the team in a number of categories including hits, runs scored and driven in this week as the Utes went 4-0, completing a sweep of Stanford for their seventh-straight Conference win. She also slugged .714 and her second home run of the season set the tone in the 13-0 opening win over Stanford. Urtez got the Utes on the board in the final game in the series against Stanford with an RBI single in the first inning. Her 14 doubles currently lead the league and her 59 hits are good for third overall. This is Utah’s 14th weekly league honor.

Alvelo (Carroll, Ohio) led the No. 10 Huskies to a series win against Oregon State, 2-1 and Alvelo earned both of the wins in the circle for the Huskies. She was relentless in the circle against the Beavers, allowing just one earned run in the longest appearance of her career. She scattered nine hits and just one walk while striking out a career-high 11 batters in 10 innings pitched. Alvelo threw 155 total pitches and 106 were for strikes. In the series finale, she earned the complete-game win, allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out six. This is Alvelo’s second pitcher of the week accolade, fourth overall and Washington’s 96th.

Dickman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the Utes this week with a .600 batting average, a .900 slugging percentage and three doubles. She accumulated five runs batted in as she notched three multi-hit games, including a two-run double in the first game of the Stanford doubleheader. This is Dickman’s second freshman weekly honor this season and Utah’s 15th overall.

A player of the week has been selected every week since 1989, with the pitcher of the week honor dating back to 1992. This is the second season of freshman of the week honors.

This week Utah heads to No. 10 Washington beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. PT, with all three games airing on Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Washington. The Pac-12 Networks full television information can be found here.
