California's Goff tops NFL Draft for the Pac-12
SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference was well represented during the NFL Draft as 32 players heard their names called during the three-day event, but none bigger than CALIFORNIA quarterback Jared Goff when he was taken by the Los Angeles Rams with the overall No. 1 pick.
Goff became the 17th player from a Pac-12 member institution to be the overall No. 1 selection, and first since Stanford’s Andrew Luck was the top pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2012. Since the NFL’s first draft in 1936, 34 quarterbacks have been selected with the No. 1 overall pick, with 12 coming from the Pac-12 Conference.
Four Pac-12 players were selected in the first round, which is about on par with the average of five players taken in the first round over the last five drafts. In addition to Goff, OREGON defensive end DeForest Buckner, the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, was taken with the seventh pick by the San Francisco 49ers, UCLA defensive tackle Kenny Clark was taken with the 27th pick by the Green Bay Packers, and STANFORD offensive guard Joshua Garnett was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 28th pick.
UCLA led all Pac-12 schools with eight players selected, trailing only Ohio State (12) and Clemson (9) for most selections by one school. Stanford had five players chosen, followed by California and USC with four players each. As a Conference, the Pac-12 was third among all leagues with the 32 selections behind the SEC (51) and the Big Ten (47).
