NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships: Trio of Pac-12 teams advance to Saturday rounds


No. 2 seed USC vs. No. 3 seed Pepperdine (Winners' Bracket)

The Trojans continued their winning ways and stayed perfect on Friday with a 3-0 sweep over Pepperdine to advance to the Winner's Bracket semifinal. USC pair Kelly Claes & Sara Hughes took court one, Nicolette Martin & Allie Wheeler took court three, and Jo Kremer & Zoe Nightengale took court three with all three pairs winning in two sets. The Trojans have now won 28-straight matches. 

No. 2 seed USC vs. No. 7 seed Georgia State (Winners' Bracket)

Coming off a Pac-12 title last weekend, No. 2 seed Trojans defeated seven-seed Georgia State 3-0. The Trojans got off to a fast start; The pairs teams of Claes & Hughes, Sophie Bukovec & Alexa Strange, Martin & Wheeler, and Kremer & Nightengale took first-set leads.

Kremer and Nightengale, otherwise known as "ZoJo," got USC on the board first with a 21-9, 21-11 win. Martin and Wheeler followed up with a swift 21-17, 21-17 victory on Court 3 to make it 2-0. The undefeated Claes/Hughes team iced it for the Trojans with a 21-13, 21-13 finish on Court 1.

USC will battle one-seeded Florida State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PT/2:00 p.m. MT. 


No. 6 seed Arizona vs. No. 7 seed Georgia State (Elimination Bracket)

The Wildcats' championship hopes came down to the wire against the Panthers, but No. 6 seed Arizona advanced after pulling out a close, three-set tiebreaker win.The Sand 'Cats took the first set in three of five matches, but Georgia State struck first. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead with Milani Pickering & Delaney Rohan's 23-21, 21-18 win over Sam Manley & Olivia MacDonald. The Witt twins answered right back with a 21-18, 21-14 match to tie things up. GSU took the lead again with a three-set win over Tyler Lucas & MacKenzie Kleespies. Jianna Bonomi & Katarina Schulz dominated their third set to tie things back up again. It all came down to Court 4.

With the first set having gone Arizona's way (22-20) and the second set in GSU's favor (21-17,) Mia Mason & Kalei Mau came back from an early third set deficit to win it 15-12. The Wildcats stay alive in the elimination bracket, where they'll play the loser of the Florida State, Hawai'i game.

No. 6 seed Arizona vs. No. 3 seed Pepperdine (Winners' Bracket)

Earlier in the day, the 'Cats fell 3-1 to the Pepperdine Waves to close out Round 1. Bonomi and Schulz captured Arizona's only match, beating Pepperdine's Kaity Bailey & Delaney Knudsen 21-18, 21-19. The Waves took an early one-set lead on three courts, but Devlin and Kleespies split sets with Cash and Seiber, ultimately falling 15-9 in the third set to seal the win for Pepperdine.

The Wildcats will face Hawaii on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. PT/12:00 p.m. MT.


No. 4 seed UCLA vs. No. 8 seed Stetson (Elimination Bracket)

The Bruins are still breathing. UCLA fell to the elimination bracket after a loss to Hawai'i in the first round, but rallied back strong with a 3-2 nail-biter win over No. 8 seed Stetson. Julie Consani & Ryann Chandler gave UCLA the early 1-0 lead with a 21-16, 21-14 win over Stetson's Alexa Richardson & Jamie Walsh. The Hatters tied it up with 21-17, 22-20 win on Court 3.

The McNamara twins pulled the Bruins back ahead with a 21-15, 21-18 victory, but the Hatters answered right back with a 21-18, 21-19 win, making it 2-2 and shifting the focus to Court 4. The Bruins' Zana Muno and Jessyka Ngauamo split sets against Stetson's Madison Akins and Samantha Harris (21-14, 21-12). Muno and Nguamo pulled ahead to take the third set 15-12, sending the Bruins onto the next round in the elimination braket.

No. 4 seed UCLA vs. No. 5 seed Hawai'i (Winners' Bracket)

No. 4 seed UCLA fell to fifth-seeded Hawai'i in a three-set sweep. Muno & Ngauamo as well as the McNamara twins grabbed first-set wins, but the Rainbow Wahine were sailing on courts 2,3 and 5.

UH's Ginger Long and Mikayla Tucker grabbed the first match. Hannah Rooks and Ari Homayun followed shortly after with a win to make it 2-0, Hawai'i. Taylor and Schucht finished off the sweep.

The Bruins will face off against Pepperdine on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PT/1:00 p.m. MT
