Arizona Through to Final Round of Stroke Play at NCAAs

TUCSON, Ariz.  – The University of Arizona women's golf team continued NCAA Championship play at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore on Sunday. After the third round, the Wildcats are tied for eighth place at nine over par after carding a team score of 293 (+5) on Sunday. The Cats will look to remain in the top eight in order to qualify for match play after tomorrow's fourth and final round. On the individual side, freshman Haley Moore stayed steady, notching a 74 (+2). She is now in a tie for seventh at four under par.

Senior Lindsey Weaver led the team in the third round, finishing with a 71 (-1), which puts her in a tie for 41st place. She managed rounds of 74 (+2) in both of the previous rounds, so the under-par round was a positive turnaround for her. Weaver's round of 71 (-1) came after four birdies, the most from the lineup today. She had two on the front nine and two on the back. Her birdie on the par-4, 380-yard No. 12 came from about 12-feet away.

“I played not so well the first two days,” said Weaver. “I worked on some things yesterday, and today I was able to hit the ball straighter and I had a lot more birdie opportunities, and I was able to make few. I got some bogeys on the back nine, so I know that I can still play better tomorrow.”

Junior Jessica Vasilic finished with a 73 (+1) in the third round. Combined with her prior rounds of 76 (+4) and 74 (+2), this gives her a share of 76th place at seven over. Sophomore Krystal Quihuis posted a three-over 75 today and sits in a tie for 70th at six over par. Freshman Gigi Stoll finished with an 82.

“The ladies struggled a little bit, but they fought hard,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “Jessica Vasilic came out strong and shot a one-over par round. She didn't play well on her last hole, but she was hitting it well and I can see her going low tomorrow. Lindsey Weaver had a great one-under par round, and again, a lot of good things are happening out there. I think we are saving the best for last, and tomorrow we have to get into that top-eight spot. The girls are motivated, and I am seeing good things.”

At four under par, Moore is still in position to make a run at the top spot on Monday in the final round of stroke play. The lead is held by Virginia Elena Carta from Duke at 13 under par, while a group of three is tied for second at seven under and a group of two is tied for fifth at five under.

Arizona tees off at 1:30 p.m. PST on Monday. For live scoring of the NCAA Championships, visit the GolfStat website at golfstatresults.com.
