NCAA Baseball Tournament Regionals: Arizona, Utah advance to winner's bracket; ASU, Washington fall

Utah

Pac-12 Regional play was an extra-inning bonanza. The latest, Utah's 10th inning, 6-5 win over one-seed Ole Miss Friday night in Oxford, Miss.

The Rebels and Utes see-sawed with the lead throughout. Josh Rose's RBI single in the second put Utah on the board first, but Kyle Watson answered with a solo shot in the third. The Utes took a one-run lead in the fifth, but Ole Miss answered in the bottom of the inning with a four-run rally. The Utes tied it right back up in the sixth on Rose's two RBI double.

Jayson Rose pitched six innings and shouldered four of the five earned runs. Riley Ottesen pitched three innings of shutout ball to keep the Utes in it. Utah took the final edge in the 10th in a clutch two-out rally; Kellen Marruffo singled on a 2-2 pitch and his pinch runner, Chandler Anderson, advanced to scoring position on a passed ball. Hunter Simmons finished it off with an RBI double to right.

The Utes play Boston College Saturday at 3 p.m PT/ 4 p.m. MT.

Arizona

Bobby Dalbec homered and pitched a perfect ninth inning--it was that kind of evening for the second-seed Wildcats.

Arizona handed the Pac-12 it's first Regional win, a 7-3 drubbing over third-seed Sam Houston State in Lafayette. The 'Cats homered three times; Ryan Aguilar (for three) and JJ Matijevic went back-to-back in the fourth to put their team up 4-0 and Dalbec added his two-strike solo shot in the sixth.

Jared Oliva's RBI triple and Louis Boyd's single in the sixth tacked two more runs to their lead.

Nathan Bannister dealt seven innings of shutout ball, holding Sam Houston to just four hits. Rio Gomez couldn't hold the shutout in relief, allowing Sam Houston to rally for three runs in the eight and ninth.

In came Dalbec--the infielder who's made quite a few pitching appearances with Arizona--who struck out Taylor Beene and forced two ground outs to preserve the win.

The Wildcats will play the winner of the Princeton/Louisiana Lafayette matchup Saturday at 5 p.m. PT/ 6 p.m. MT.

Washington

UCSB's Austin Bush's walk-off homer in the 14th inning sealed UCSB's 3-2 win over the Huskies on a long Friday afternoon in Nashville. The Gauchos struck first in the third after Devon Gradford's RBI single; but the Huskies answered right back, knotting it up on a sac fly from Joey Morgan. That knot was pulled pretty tight. The game stood at a 1-1 stalemate for six innings--from the fourth, through the ninth, and into the 11th. It looked like the Huskies would break free in the 12th; Nyles Nygaard drew a leadoff walk and KJ Brady reached on a fielding error. John Naff was intentionally walked to load the bases but MJ Hubbs drew a five-pitch walk to bring the go-ahead runner home. Of course, the Gauchos had an answer. Gradford pounded a solo shot deep over the tall left field fence to knot it again until Bush's dagger.

Arizona State

The Sun Devils got off to a rough start in the NCAA Regionals, falling 5-1 to third-seed Gonzaga Friday afternoon in Fort Worth. Gonzaga's starter Brandon Bailey stifled ASU, holding them to one run of five hits through seven innings. The Sun Devils' only run came courtesy of a fielder's choice in the fourth inning.

ASU starter Seth Martinez lasted just 2.1 innings after Gonzaga rallied for all five of their runs against him. Taylor Jones led the way with two RBI; a double in the second put the 'Zags on the board and a single in his next at bat put them up 4-0.  Eli Lingos stopped the bleeding, taking over for 6.1 shutout innings--giving up just one hit and striking out four-- to ice the game. The Devils just couldn't rally back into it. 

ASU will play Oral Roberts in the elimination bracket.
