Roundup: Oregon State and Utah kick off 2016 Thursday night
Australia was fun, but the college football season really gets into gear Thursday. The Beavs make a trek out to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers (6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT, Big Ten Network), and Gina Mizell writes about Oregon State quarterback Darell Garretson’s leadership qualities in this article.
Before that game gets going, Utah will have already kicked off against Southern Utah on Pac-12 Networks (5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT), and Kyle Goon provides us with this Utah-Southern Utah game guide.
Arizona football will honor Zach Hemmila with helmet stickers and hat patches this season, Rich Rodriguez said after practice Wednesday. There will also be a pre-game ceremony before the season opener against BYU and another before the home opener the following week against Grambling State.
Kyle Bonagura lets us know that the USC football team got some Jordan 12s before the Alabama game. About a $190 value, apparently.
Kerri Walsh Jennings is boycotting an AVP beach event because of two rule experiments that weren’t discussed “honestly or meaningfully” with players in advance of the event (CBS News). The rules do kind of sound stupid – you’d get a second chance to serve if you missed your first one, kind of like a double fault in tennis, and the other would not allow a team to win if it wasn’t on serve (going back to the old sideout days, sort of). Those are pretty fundamental rules to switch up.
Former Georgetown basketball forward Paul White is transferring to Oregon, reports Andrew Nemec of The Oregonian/OregonLive. White, who will have to sit out this season, was a top-50 recruit in the class of 2014 according to Rivals.
Jeremy Cluff of The Arizona Republic discusses all of the work that has gone in to renovating Sun Devil Stadium. Arizona State will have a “Sun Devil Football Construction Appreciation Night” Saturday against Northern Arizona to honor those working on the renovation.
Jacob Thorpe writes about all the optimism and confidence surrounding Washington State football as the Cougs head into their season opener against a usually-dangerous Eastern Washington team. Season-ticket sales are up 2,000 from this point last season, and Washington State has a goal of selling out all seven home games this year.
Connor Letourneau features Cal safety Khari Vanderbilt, who had a team-high seven tackles in the triumph over Hawai’i. He’s a San Jose native (Independence High stand up – I played pickup football there, but go Bells), so you know he’s gotta be a good guy.
Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports lists UCLA’s Josh Rosen as the No. 5 most intriguing quarterback in college football this year. Clemson’s Deshaun Watson gets Forde’s top nod.
