AP Top 25: Washington stays at No. 5, Utah jumps into top 20

Idle Washington remained at No. 5 and Utah jumped up to No. 19 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, giving the Pac-12 two ranked teams for the second straight week. The SEC leads the way with eight teams, while the Big Ten has four (all in the top 10), the ACC also has four, the Big 12 has three, the American has two and the Mountain West and MAC each have one.

No game for the Dawgs, and no change in the ranking for Chris Petersen’s bunch. Fifth-ranked Washington now gets ready to play feisty Oregon State, which gave Utah all it could handle Saturday afternoon. Here’s the remaining schedule for the team that has the best chance in the Pac-12 to make the College Football Playoff: vs. Oregon State, at Utah, at Cal, vs. USC, vs. Arizona State and at Wazzu. There’s a ton of football left, but that Nov. 25 Apple Cup is looking awfully juicy (like “winner goes to Santa Clara” juicy).

It certainly wasn’t pretty, but the Utes got it done on a tough-weather day, outlasting an Oregon State team that is probably giving teams a tougher fight than many expected after losing at Colorado by 41. Welcome out of retirement, Joe Williams: On a day with conditions that made throwing the football difficult (Troy Williams went just 4-of-13, while OSU starter Darell Garretson was 4-of-20 for 24 yards before getting hurt), Williams rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown in his first game back after having been away from the team for a month. The 19-14 triumph made the 6-1 Utes the second Pac-12 team to become bowl eligible and moved them up two spots from No. 21 to No. 19. Up next for Kyle Whittingham’s crew is a date at UCLA – the Bruins might be 3-4, but they’re anything but a pushover. A win at what could be Utah’s first of two trips to the Rose Bowl would be a good one.
