All eight Pac-12 gymnastics teams are hitting the road this weekend. From a regional rivalry in Provo to cross country trips to the likes of Iowa, Oklahoma, and Maryland -- every Pac-12 team is taking the show on the road.
Once again this weekend, Pac-12 teams are challenging themselves against top competition. Seven teams ranked in the top 25 of the current national standings will face Pac-12 competition this weekend, highlighted by No. 8 UCLA making the trip to No. 2 Oklahoma. Other top teams going up against the Pac-12 in the coming days include No. 7 Denver, No. 11 Michigan, No. 18 Minnesota, No. 22 Ohio State, No. 23 BYU, and No. 24 Iowa.
As expected, the former Olympians competing in the Pac-12 had incredible opening weekends of the 2017 season. In her first collegiate gymnastics meet, UTAH freshman and 2016 Team USA alternate MyKayla Skinner earned the fourth-best opening weekend all-around score in the nation. Skinner is also ranked 9th on vault, 5th on bars, and 7th on floor. Skinner's performance in UTAH's win over Michigan earned her both Gymnast of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors in the Pac-12. UCLA freshman and gold medalist Madison Kocian also enjoyed a successful first outing as a college gymnast, earning herself the tenth-highest all-around score in the nation over the weekend. CALIFORNIA junior and 2016 Olympian Toni-Ann Williams opened the season by marking the third-best floor score in the nation.
The Pac-12 performed especially well on vault in the first week of competition. Of the seven teams that were in action, five are now ranked in the top 10 nationally on vault: CALIFORNIA and UCLA are tied at No. 4, STANFORD sits at No. 6, UTAH is No. 8, and OREGON STATE is the tenth-best vault team in the nation.
After being off last weekend, WASHINGTON will open the season at No. 22 Ohio State this weekend in a meet that will also feature No. 11 Michigan and Kent State. This will be the first meet as a Husky for first year head coach Elise Ray.
Gymnasts come from all over the world to compete in the Pac-12. This year’s rosters include 14 international student-athletes from four different countries: Canada (9), Australia (3), Ecuador (1), and Jamaica (1).
UTAH sold more than 8,600 season tickets for the 2017 gymnastics season, selling season seats in the upper deck for the first time in school history. Their season opener against Michigan on Saturday drew a crowd of 14,675.
