SAN FRANCISCO-- This week's national rankings have UTAH at No. 4, joined in the top-25 by No. 8 UCLA, No. 15 CALIFORNIA, No. 17 OREGON STATE, and No. 19 WASHINGTON.
Utah freshman MyKayla Skinner has now been named Pac-12 Gymnast and Freshman of the week all three weeks of the season. Only one other time in the awards' history has a single student-athlete been awarded both honors on the same week. MyKayla's 39.775 all-around score this past weekend is the second highest all-around score in the nation this year. She's ranked second-best in the all-around in the nation, with teammate Baely Rowe close behind at 3rd in the nation.
All 8 teams are in action on Pac-12 Networks (see schedule below for specific network) this weekend as conference play begins in earnest. Two matchups of top-20 teams are slated for Saturday: No. 4 Utah at No. 19 Washington and No. 8 UCLA at No. 17 Oregon State.
An impressive four Pac-12 gymnasts from three different schools are ranked in the top-10 nationally on the bars after the first three weeks of competition. Elizabeth Price of STANFORD is in second place nationally with a 9.950 average, UCLA teammates Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Kyla Ross are tied for seventh place, and UTAH standout freshman MyKayla Skinner is in ninth place. As a team, UCLA is ranked third nationally on the bars and UTAH is ranked sixth.
Three Pac-12 teams remain undefeated as conference competition gets underway this week: CALIFORNIA, UTAH, and OREGON STATE. No. 15 CALIFORNIA is 7-0 with two victories already over Pac-12 squads. No. 4 UTAH sits at 5-0 going into their meet with No. 19 WASHINGTON and No. 17 OREGON STATE will put their 4-0 record on the line when they host No. 8 UCLA this weekend.
UTAH sophomore All-American Sabrina Schwab, the 2016 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, will miss the remainder of the season after tearing her ACL in practice on Jan. 17.
Gymnasts come from all over the world to compete in the Pac-12. This year’s rosters include 14 international student-athletes from four different countries: Canada (9), Australia (3), Ecuador (1), and Jamaica (1).
UTAH sold more than 8,600 season tickets ahead of the 2017 gymnastics season, selling season seats in the upper deck for the first time in school history. In their meet last weekend with Boise State, Denver, and Illinois-Chicago, attendance numbers were predictably impressive, totaling 15,105.
