Roundup: esports coming to Utah

Utah Athletics

Utah has announced plans to add a varsity esports team, making the Utes the first Power Five conference school to do so. Brennan Smith of The Salt Lake Tribune has more details.

It looks like men’s basketball transfers are looking at Arizona as an option, as former Rice Owl Marcus Evans has the ‘Cats in his top three and former Dukie Chase Jeter has ‘Zona in his list as well (CBS Sports). Makes sense, with the recent success Arizona has had and Lauri Markkanen and Kobi Simmons already entering the NBA Draft with potentially a few more to follow.

With the sixth-ranked Buffs hosting Stanford in their final regular-season home game Friday afternoon, Pat Rooney features the Colorado lacrosse seniors, a group who played in the team’s first game in program history in 2014. What a job they’ve done building that program up.

Oregon State

Danny Moran tells us that the Oregon State baseball team is staying relaxed during its 20-game win streak. The Beavs open a series with Utah on Friday.

Going on ESPN’s SportsNation, Lonzo Ball said he’d rather be a Los Angeles Laker than the No. 1 pick of the 2017 NBA Draft, if he had to make a choice. Not enough Ball for you? How about LaVar Ball saying UCLA lost in the NCAA Tournament because it had too many white guys?

Arizona State

On Thursday afternoon, Wyoming football announced it will play at Arizona State in 2024 (NBC Sports). The two teams haven’t met in 40 years, when ASU was still in the WAC.

Speaking of Wyoming, Oregon football’s kickoff time against Wyoming has been set – Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. PT, reports Andrew Greif.

Kyle Bonagura writes about USC’s freshman receiver class that has allowed the Trojans to retool at that position after losing their top two receivers from last season.

It took four and a half years, but we finally have our first bit of celebrity gossip on the roundup – Green Bay Packers quarterback and former Cal great Aaron Rodgers and actress Olivia Munn have ended their relationship. Apparently the two are still close friends. That’s what they all say, though, right?

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports ranks Stanford 15th in his early top 25 college football poll for 2017, providing a breakdown of the Cardinal in the link.
