Top-eight seeds advance to quarters of Pac-12 beach volleyball pairs tournament

• USC wins back-to-back Pac-12 beach volleyball titles

TUCSON, Ariz. - The field of 18 in the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships was pared down to eight after the first day of the pairs tournament at the Arizona Beach Volleyball Courts on the campus of the University of Arizona. The top-eight seeds held serve, advancing to the quarterfinals which will be held on Saturday. Among the pairs that have advanced are Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, and Sophie Bukovec and Allie Wheeler who led the Trojans to their second-straight team title earlier in the day.

UCLA also had two pairs advance into the quarterfinal round. Second-seeded Kamila Tan and Madi Yeomans staved off a persistent CALIFORNIA pair of Bryce Bark and Olivia Rodberg (21-18, 21-13). Bruin teammates Elise Zappia and Torrey Van Winden had to come-from-behind to remain in the tournament, holding off UTAH’s pair of Adora Anae and Dani Barton, 2-1 (13-21, 21-18, 15-11).

Twin sisters McKenna and Madison Witt had the crowd on their side when the Wildcat pair faced WASHINGTON’s Cassie Strickland and Courtney Schwan, winning in straight sets (21-11, 21-14). The Witts face another Husky pair in the quarterfinal, Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray.

ARIZONA STATE’s Bianca Arellano and Whitney Folette went 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) against OREGON’s Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle to move on, and STANFORD’s Kathryn Plummer and Jenna Gray earned their spot in the quarterfinal with a two-set win over Arizona’s Olivia Macdonald and Olivia Hallaran.

Defending Pac-12 pairs champion Claes and Hughes look to defend their title on Saturday when the pairs tournament of the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships continues on Saturday morning. The four quarterfinal matches start at 9 a.m. The semifinal matches have been moved up to 10:30 a.m. and the championship match takes place at 12 noon, an hour earlier than originally scheduled.
