NCAA Track & Field Championships: Stanford’s Grant Fisher takes 5K title
The men’s NCAA Track & Field Championships saw competition wrap up on Friday night as individuals were crowned national champions and Florida took home the team title.
Men’s 5000m: Stanford’s Grant Fisher was grinning ear-to-ear as he won his first NCAA title with a time of 14:35.60. The sophomore used a strong 300m to stay with the lead runner and to close out for the win.
Colorado’s Joe Klecker (14:38.03) and John Dressel (14:38.40) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, to both collect First Team All-America honors. Their teammate Zach Perrin finished 11th in 14:41.50, while UCLA’s Daniel De La Torre ran a 14:43.49 for 14th.
Men’s 4x100: The quartet from Oregon of Damarcus Simpson, Kyree King, Julius Shellmire and Marcus Chambers set the school record, posting a time of 38.81 to finish sixth.
Men’s 1500m: Colorado’s Ben Saarel earned the third All-America honor of his career after placing eighth in the metric mile in a time of 3:44.78. His eighth-place finish gives him First Team All-America recognition and collected a point for the Buffs.
3000m Steeplechase: Arizona’s Bailey Roth earned Second Team All-America honors with his 11th place steeple finish, 8:48.70.
Men's 110H: USC’s Marquis Morris secured three points in the high hurdles and First Team All-America honors with his 13.75 sixth-place finish.
100m: Oregon’s Kyree King placed the highest for a Duck in the 100-meter dash since 1970, placing fourth with a time of 10.20 to collect first team honors and five points for the host Ducks.
400: USC’s freshman Michael Norman placed fourth in 44.88 for five points for the Trojans, while Oregon’s Marcus Chambers placed sixth in 45.28 for three points.
400H: UCLA’s Rai Benjamin got edged at the tape to take second in 48.33 for eight points. Florida senior Eric Futch took the title in 48.32.
200m: Mirroring his 100m performance, Oregon’s Kyree King placed fourth with a time of 20.61. King would account for 10 of Oregon’s 19.5 points today.
Men’s High Jump: Arizona freshman Justice Summerset cleared 2.18m (7-1¾) to haul in First Team All-America honors his rookie season.
Men’s Triple Jump: USC junior Eric Sloan leaped to a distance of 15.62m (51-3) for 16th place.
Men’s Discus: Arizona State’s Kyle Long placed eighth with a toss of 58.09m (190-7) to collect a point for the Sun Devils. Oregon’s Ryan Hunter-Simms placed 20th with a distance of 53.07m (174-1).
