Roundup: Utah signs with Pepsi, limits the blue

Jun 29, 2017
Utah Athletics

Utah

Gotta love college athletics – many Pepsi products on Utah’s campus don’t have the Pepsi blue in the logo because of the BYU rivalry. Utah signed a contract with Pepsi after its 10-year contract with Coca-Cola expired.

Colorado

Team Colorado is beginning preparations for The Basketball Tournament, writes Pat Rooney. The group of former CU hoopers made it all the way to the title game last year, coming up just short of the $2 million winner-take-all payout. This year’s team features NBA vet Chris Copeland, Josh Scott and Richard Roby, to name a few.

Oregon

Oregon athletics finished ninth in the Directors’ Cup standings, the school’s best all-time finish for the third year in a row.

California

Thursday is Rich Feller’s last day of work as Cal women’s volleyball head coach. He officially announced his retirement in April and will be replaced by Matt McShane, a former Feller assistant.

Oregon State

Former Oregon Stater Eric Moreland will play for the Detroit Pistons in the Orlando Summer League (Building the Dam). Moreland had a great season in the D-League with the Canton Charge, averaging 12.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in 44 games, earning a D-League All-Star nod in the process. He should be a shoe-in for an NBA training camp and could very well land on some team’s regular-season roster.

USC

USC quarterback Sam Darnold is ranked 11th in Sports Illustrated’s top 100 players in college football article (this link is for 100-11; I guess the top 10 comes out Friday).

Stanford

So what was Stanford AD Bernard Muir’s favorite national championship moment from 2016-17? Click on the “Pac-12 Sports Report” preview to find out. I was expecting him to give some sort of answer that incorporated all four programs that won a natty this year, but he actually talks about a distinct moment, one you probably wouldn’t think about off top.

Arizona

The list of Pac-12 Football Media Days attendees was released Wednesday, and offensive lineman Jacob Alsadek and defensive end/linebacker DeAndre’ Miller will represent Arizona alongside head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Washington

Ha! Second-round draft pick Jordan Bell thinks No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz should be jealous of Bell because he’s playing for the defending-champion Golden State Warriors and Fultz isn’t (but the Sixers should be nice next year). Bell said as much – jokingly – on 95.7 The Game Wednesday (USA TODAY Sports on the link).

UCLA

Jrue Holiday is No. 9 on The Vertical’s list of the top 50 NBA free agents. The former Bruin averaged 15.4 points and 7.3 assists in 51 games last year.

Arizona State

Take some time to read this oral history of Barry Bonds’ mammoth home run at Yankee Stadium in 2002. YouTube highlight is included in the Sports Illustrated link; how was this only 385 feet?

Washington State

Watch the second episode of the Washington State football series “The Process.” As they say, you gotta trust the process.
