PAC-12 FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK:
THE RANKINGS: Four Pac-12 teams are ranked in the AP and five in the Coaches polls. WASHINGTON (5/4), WASHINGTON STATE (8/9), USC (13/13), STANFORD (23/25) and UTAH (nr/23) ... That’s 14 consecutive weeks with four or more teams in the AP Top 25.
SEEKING PERFECTION: There are 13 FBS teams remain undefeated. Seven of those 13 are perfect at 6-0, including the Pac-12’s WASHINGTON (6-0) and WASHINGTON STATE (6-0). The SEC is the only other conference with two teams at 6-0 (Alabama, Georgia).
BEST START: Here’s how Washington and Washington State compares to previous undefeated starts to a season:
Washington - Best start since 2016 (started 9-0).
Washington State - Best start since 2001 (started 7-0).
It’s just the second time that Washington and Washington State are both 6-0 to start the season. It also occurred in 1992 when the Huskies opened 8-0 and the Cougars started the season 6-0. Both teams had similar undefeated starts in three other seasons, but ties were included. (1906: UW 3-0-4, WSU 6-0. 1915: UW 7-0, WSU 6-0-1. 1962: UW 4-0-2, WSU 4-0-1)
608: ARIZONA sophomroe QB Khalil Tate set an FBS rushing record for a quarterback with 327 yards on 14 carries (24.3 ypc) in the 45-42 win at COLORADO. The Buff’s senior RB Lindsay Phillips rushed for 281 yards in the loss. The two combined for the most rushing yards by opposing players in Pac-12 history with 608 yarrds.
ELITE COMPANY: STANFORD junior RB Bryce Love set a Stanford single-game rushing record last week with 301 yards on 25 carries (12.04 ypc) with a pair of touchdowns in the 34-24 win over Arizona State. Meanwhile, ARIZONA sophomroe QB Khalil Tate set an FBS rushing record for a quarterback with 327 yards on 14 carries (24.3 ypc) in the 45-42 win at Colorado. Five of the Pac-12’s top 10 single-game rushing totals have come in the last six seasons.

SHOW SOME LOVE: In comparing STANFORD junior RB Bryce Love’s numbers to the running backs who have won the Heisman Trophy over the last 20 years, only Texas’ Ricky Williams achieved 1,000 yards rushing by the ffith game of the season. Love has posted a much higher yards per carry average than Williams. One similarity between Love and Williams, is that their teams were 4-2 through the first six games.

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU: WASHINGTON STATE senior QB Luke Falk has moved to the top of the list on several Pac-12 career record lists and is within striking distance of several others.
Total Plays: 1,995 (previous record: 1,824 by Carson Palmer, USC, 1998-2002)
Pass Completions: 1,235 (previous record: 1,187 by Sean Mannion, OSU, 2011-14)
Touchdown Passes: 108 (2nd, trails Matt Barkley, USC, 116)
Total Offense: 12,560 (3rd, trails Marcus Mariota, 13,033, and Sean Mannion, 12,796)

PAC-12 IN THE NFL: When NFL opening day rosters were revealed, 258 former Pac-12 players found themselves listed on active rosters. USC led all Pac-12 teams with 42, followed by UCLA with 30. California, Stanford and Utah had 28 former players make active rosters.
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES: The Pac-12 membership was well represented by the recent announcement of the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Class of 2018. Of the five inductees, three are tied to Pac-12 members: Herman “Buddy” Pi’kei Clark (Oregon State, 1949-51), Ma’ake Kemoeatu (Utah, 1998-2001), and Manu Tuiasosopo (UCLA, 1975-78). The Class of 2018 will be honored during the Polynesian Football Hall fo Fame Enshrinement Weekend, January 19 & 20 in Oahu, Hawai’i.
PAC-12 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
Khalil Tate, QB, ARIZ
Tate came off the bench to set the FBS single-game rushing record for a quarterback with 327 yards, which is the fifth-most in Pac-12 history. Totaled 208 yards on four touchdown runs (58, 28, 47 and 75 yards) for an average of 52.0 yards per score. Completed 12 of 13 pass attempts for 154 yards and one touchdown. Totaled 481 yards of offense, the fifth-highest tally in school history. Became second FBS quarterback ever (Jordan Lynch, NIU, 2013) to rush for 300 yards and pass for 150 in a game.
Justin Reid, DB, STAN
Reid had a team-high seven tackles, added a tackle for loss and the game-clinching interception to lead Stanford to a 23-20 win over Utah. Late in the 3rd quarter, clinging to a six-point lead on the road, and Utah had first-and-goal at the Stanford two-yard line. On first down, Reid assisted on a tackle to stuff the Utes at the one-yard line, and on the next play, Reid came up to pin the Utes for a one-yard loss. The Utes settled for a field goal, and Stanford never surrendered the lead. Reid had an interception for the third straight game as his late 4th quarter helped clinch the win.
Erik Powell, PK, WSU
Powell connected on all four field goal attempts and all three extra points for a 15-point night in WSU’s 33-10 win at Oregon. Powell hit from 25, a career-best 52, 47 and 29 yards. His 52-yard field goal was the longest by a WSU kicker since 2013. Powell is second in the conference with 12 FGM, tied for the lead in total points (64) and second in field goal percentage (92.3).

WASHINGTON STATE (6-0) at CALIFORNIA (3-3)

WASHINGTON STATE: Notched it’s third-straight win over Oregon for the first time since 1982-84 and first time posting back-to-back wins in Eugene since 1982 and 1984 ... The Cougars forced three turnovers, improving to 18-3 when forced multiple turnovers under defensive coordinator Alex Grinch ... The Cougars held Oregon to 277 yards of offense and 10 points, Oregon entered the game averaging 537.4 yards/g and 49.6 ppg ... With the 33-10 win at Oregon, senior QB Luke Falk earned career-win No. 24, tying Jason Gesser’s school record ... Falk completed 24 of 42 passes for 242 yards and 3 TDs. It was the 33rd time he’s thrown for 200 or more yards in a game and the 20th time he’s tossed three or more TD passes in a game ... Senior RB Jamal Morrow had five receptions to up his career total to 165, passing Isiah Myers for 9th-most in WSU history.
CALIFORNIA: Senior LB Devante Downs continues to pace the Pac-12 in tackles with 60 (10.0 tackles/game). Downs was recently added to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list for the nation’s top defensive player ... Sophomore QB Ross Bowers has not thrown an interception in his last 66 attempts ... The Bears have recorded 13 turnovers (6 fumbles, 7 interceptions) so far this season. They had 18 takeaways all of last season ... Senior PK Matt Anderson has posted 259 points in his career and is just 29 points shy of Doug Brien’s school record of 288 points ... The Bears look to right the rushing game as they have -32 yards rushing on 55 attempts over the last two games.
COLORADO (3-3) at OREGON STATE (1-5)

COLORADO: Senior TB Phillip Lindsay rushed 41 times for 281 yards in the loss to Arizona. The 41 carries set a CU single-game mark, while the 281 rushing yards were the fourth-most in game. His 320 all-purpose yards were seventh most in school history and he has now become CU’s all-time leader in all-purpose yardage with 4,989 yards ... Lindsay is bidding to become CU’s first-ever 1,000-yard rusher/receiver as he currently has 3,043 yards rushing and 869 yard receiving ... In pursuit of No. 700, Colorado’s all-time record is 698-496-36 ... Sophomore QB Steven Montez completed 19-of-32 for 251 yards and 3 TDs. It was his fourth career 3-touchdown game.
OREGON STATE: Oregon State and head coach Gary Andersen have mutually agreed to part. Stepping in as interim head coach will be Cory Hall. Hall is in his second season with the team after joining Oregon State in January 2016. He has college coaching experience at Washington State, Weber State and Wisconsin. In addition, he is a six-year NFL veteran, having played for the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals. ... The Beavers just played three consecutive ranked opponents (No. 21 Washington State, No. 6 Washington and No. 14 USC). The last time that occurred was the final three games of the 2010 season (#20 USC, #7 Stanford, #1 Oregon). Besides the 2010 season, it’s occurred only two other times - also in 1950 (#19 Michigan State, #8 Stanford, #11 Washington, #5 California) and 1954 (#3 UCLA, #13 USC, #14 Minnesota) ... Senior WR Seth Collins had five receptions for 91 yards against USC. He has been the team’s leading receiver in two of the last three games with 12 receptions, 130 yards and one TD.
UTAH (4-1) at USC (5-1)

UTAH: Utah has won two of the last three meetings with USC ... Senior LB Sunia Tauteoli had 11 tackles (3.5 tackles for loss) in the loss to Stanford .... Senior WR Darren Carrington has three 100-yard receiving games (nearly had a fourth with 99 yards against Stanford) and 10 career 100-yard games (seven at Oregon). Carrington leads the Pac-12 and fifth in the nation in receiving yards per game (116.8 avg) ... Utah’s specialist continue to shine nationally - senior PK Matt Gay leads the FBS in field goals (16), field goals per game (3.20) and points (64, tied); junior P Mitch Wishnowsky leads the FBS in net punting (44.75); senior PR Boobie Hoobs is fifth in the nation with 189 punt return yards and ninth with a 15.8 punt return average.
USC: Sophomore QB Sam Darnold is 14-2 as a starter after completing 23-of-35 for 316 yards and 3 TDs in the win over Oregon State. He connected with 12 different receivers ... Darnold has thrown for at least 200 yards in 15 games and at least 3 TD passes in a game eight times ... Trojans lead the Pac-12 in red zone defense, allowing 17 scores in 25 trips (.680) by their opponents inside the 20-yard line and picked ... Freshman WR Tyler Vaughns has posted 11 receptions for 157 yards and one score over the last two games ... After missing his first field goal attempt of his career in USC’s win over Texas, freshman walk-on PK Chase McGrath has now hit eight consecutive field goals.
UCLA (3-2) at ARIZONA (3-2)

UCLA: The Bruins have won the last five in the series with Arizona ... Junior QB Josh Rosen leads the nation in passing yards (427.0 ypg) and total offense (431.6 ypg) ... He’s thrown for 350 yards or more four times this season and a school record eighth times in his career. He’s currently on a stretch of throwing for at least 300 yards in five straight games ... Senior C Scott Quessenberry and senior LB Kenny Young are two of thirty candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior Class Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
ARIZONA: Wildcats are leading the league and are fourth nationally in rushing (321.8 ypg) and will be facing a UCLA defense that is allowing a league-high 284.2 yards per game on the ground ... Dating back to last season, Arizona has rushed for 150 or more yards in 11 straight games. It’s the longest streak since Arizona rushed for 150 or more in 11 straight over the final eight games of 2013 and the first three of 2014. Arizona has rushed for 200 or more yards in four of five games this season ... Sophomore QB Khalil Tate earned several national accolades, including the Walter Camp Foundation Offensive Player of the Week, for his record-breaking performance at Colorado (327 yards rushing/4 TDs, 12-of-13 passing for 154 yards/1 TD) ... Tate and junior QB Brandon Dawkins have combined to rush for 771 yards and 10 TDs.
WASHINGTON (6-0) at ARIZONA STATE (2-3)

WASHINGTON: The Husky defense posted eight sacks on Saturday and held California to -40 yards rushing and 93 yards total offense (fifth fewest by a UW opponent in single-game history) ... Washington is second in the FBS in total defense (228.8 ypg) and third in scoring defense (10.2 ppg) ... Washington has won 12 of is last 13 conference games ... Junior QB Jake Browning was 27-of-40 for 215 yards and 2 TDs in the win over Cal. He connected with senior WR Dante Pettis 10 times for 48 yards, and freshman TE Bryant Hunter nine times for 121 yards/1 TD ... Browning now has 73 career TD passes, just two shy of matching the school career mark of 75 held by Keith Price (2010-13)... Pettis has 22 receptions for 151 yards and 3 TDs over the last two games.
ARIZONA STATE: Sophomore WR N’Keal Harry has started 17 games and has a reception in all 17 of those games. Harry is currently fifth in the Pac-12, averaging 95.2 receiving yards per game with 34 receptions and 3 TDs ... The Sun Devils have had 5 different receivers with 100+ yards in just four games this season, a total it had never reached in an entire season prior to this year ... The Sun Devils are the only Pac-12 team to remain perfect (18-for-18) in red zone opportunities with 15 TDs and 3 FGs ... The Sun Devils lead the league in fewest penalties (19) ... Junior QB Manny Wilkins set an ASU record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception. Dating back to last season, he had 192 pass attempts before suffering an interception in the second quarter at Stanford. During that stretch he was 130-of-192 for 1,660 yards and 11 TDs.
OREGON (4-2) at STANFORD (4-2)

OREGON: Due to injuries, freshman QB Braxton Burmeister was thrust into the starting role last week vs. Washington State. He responded by completing 15 of 27 for 145 yards and 1 TD ... Burmeister is one of 13 true freshman to see action for the Ducks this season ... Sophomore LB Troy Dye had a team-high 11 tackles and forced one fumble vs. WSU. It was his eighth double-digit tackle effort in 17 career games played ... Senior RB Royce Freeman has a school-record 54 career TDs and is now just five rushing TDs shy of matching the Pac-12 career mark held by Oregon State’s Ken Simonton (59 TDs, 1998-2001). His 4,800 career rushing yards place him fifth on the Pac-12 career chart behind USC’s Marcus Allen (4,810 yards, 1978-81) ... The Ducks saw a streak of 47 consecutive games scoring 20 or more points come to an end with the 33-10 setback to Washington State. The last time the Ducks scored fewer than 20 points was Nov. 23, 2013 at Arizona in a 42-16 defeat.
STANFORD: Junior RB Bryce Love his averaging an FBS-best 206.7 rushing yards per game and is third nationally with 209.8 all-purpose yards per game. He has surpassed 100 yards rushing, scored at least one touchdown and posted a run of 50 yards or longer in eight consecutive games. He has rushed for over 150 yards in every game this season. He’s rushed for 100 or more yards in each of the last eight games for a total of 1,469 yards on 146 carries (10.1 avg), extending his school record as the only Cardinal to eclipse 100 yards in his first eight career starts ... Love’s career touchdowns are 93, 47, 48, 7, 56, 50, 49, 10, 75, 51, 53, 69, 61, 43, 59 and 68 yards. He’s also chalked up 14 runs of 40 or more yards ... Junior SS Justin Reid had one interception at Stanford, giving him an FBS-best five picks this season.
