Virginia named Tina Thompson its new women’s basketball head coach on Monday. Good to see the former Trojan get her first head coaching gig.

Former Stanford women’s basketball star Brittany McPhee signed a training camp deal with the Seattle Storm. Here’s to hoping the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year can make the regular-season roster.

From over the weekend – top-30 recruit Taeshon Cherry signed a letter of intent with Arizona State men’s basketball. As Doug Haller notes in the link, Bobby Hurley has brought in a top-25 class.

Junior college All-American Shane Gatling signed a letter of intent with Colorado men’s basketball on Monday (The Denver Post). Gatling averaged 16.6 points per game for Indian Hills Community College in Iowa last season, the same JUCO that has produced Detroit Pistons guard Dwight Buycks.

Utah baseball’s game against Utah Valley scheduled for Tuesday is postponed and will be made up on Tuesday, May 15. The Utes are at Arizona State this weekend.

UCLA men’s basketball hired Murry Bartow as an assistant coach, head coach Steve Alford announced Monday. Bartow has 18 years of head coaching experience at East Tennessee State and UAB combined and his late father, Gene, was the head coach at UCLA for two seasons.

Oregon State baseball’s Trevor Larnach and Luke Heimlich were named Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Larnach hit two homers Friday against Missouri State, while Heimlich struck out 10 in six innings Friday.

Brady Henderson of ESPN writes a feature story on former Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea, who Henderson calls “the NFL draft’s top freak.” Believe it or not, Vea’s first sport was tennis.

DJ Dunson of Yahoo! Sports writes that former Wildcat Andre Iguodala has flipped the switch in the playoffs for the Golden State Warriors. Iggy went for 14 points, seven rounds and five assists in the Dubs’ 116-101 Game 2 win over San Antonio Monday night.

There was a memorial service at the Rose Bowl for Keith Jackson on Sunday (Associated Press). The Washington State alum did it all in the sports broadcasting world and was probably most famous for broadcasting the Rose Bowl.
