Top seeds hold on first day of Pac-12 beach volleyball championship

STANFORD, Calif. - The top four seeds of the third-annual Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship advanced on the first day of the event held at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium in Stanford, Calif., including top-ranked and top-seeded UCLA, which swept its opponent, 5-0, to move on to the second day.

All six duals of the day held according to seeds, UCLA winning all five matches versus eighth-seeded Utah. Second-seeded USC cruised to a 4-1 win over seventh-seeded ARIZONA STATE. Third-seeded CALIFORNIA’s No. 1 pair Mima Mirkovic and Jessica Gaffney defeated sixth-seeded WASHINGTON’s top pair of Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner, 24-22, 23-21, to give the Golden Bears the deciding point and eventual 4-1 victory.

Kate Formico and Catherine Raquel claimed the third set, 15-7, at the No. 3 spot to give host and fourth-seeded Stanford the 4-1 win over fifth-seeded ARIZONA. Before being knocked down to the contender’s bracket by the Bruins, the Utes opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over ninth-seeded OREGON. The pair of Adora Anae and Dani Barton came back from being down a set to win the final two to give Utah the clinching point and the dual win, 4-1.

ASU closed out the day by staving off elimination in decisive fashion, defeating the Ducks, 5-0, in the first knockout dual of the championship.

The action continues on Friday with the Wildcats and Utes battling in the second elimination dual of the championship and first of the day at 8 a.m. PT, followed by the Huskies and Sun Devils at 9:45 a.m. PT. In the quarterfinal of the winners bracket, USC faces Cal at 11:30 a.m. PT, followed by the Bruins and Stanford at 1:15 p.m. PT. The day closes out with two more elimination duals at 3 p.m. PT and 4:45 p.m. PT. The championship concludes on Saturday with matches beginning at 9 a.m. PT and the title match is slated for 3 p.m. PT.

The Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship will be televised on Pac-12 Network and/or Pac-12 Network Bay Area through Saturday’s championship matchup.
