NCAA Baseball Regionals: Washington, Oregon State win, Stanford and UCLA lose in regionals
After collecting opening-day wins, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA, Stanford were in action Saturday in the winners' bracket of their respective NCAA Baseball Regionals. See how the teams fared in their matchups.
Conway, South Carolina Regional: Washington 11, Coastal Carolina 7
The Huskies stunned the nation's No. 15 seed in the tournament with a dramatic second inning Saturday.
Nick Kahle lifted a grand slam — the Huskies' first of the 2018 season — to cap a game-changing inning which saw UW score six runs. At that point, it was a 6-1 UW lead.
But the Chanticleers had plenty of drive to come back. They scored three times in the third, once in the fifth and once in the sixth as UW scored just once during the same period to make it 7-6. Washington starter Lucas Knowles was chased out in the fourth after allowing four runs and six hits over 3 2/3 innings.
The Huskies scored again in the sixth when Joe Wainhouse belted a two-run homer for the 16th time this season.
UW advances to the Conway Regional final Sunday at 3 p.m. PT.
Minneapolis, Minnesota Regional: Minnesota 3, UCLA 2
The Bruins sat through a couple delays — taking the first pitch an hour late and then returning to the dugout for another 30 minute lightning stall. Both delays sandwiched Zack Pettway's shutout first inning and a Jeremy Yden's single to start the bottom of the first.
Once the clouds passed, Ydens took his place back at first and moved the line, stealing second, taking third on a groundout and scoring UCLA's first run on a sac fly. Pettway couldn't completely center himself after the delay, getting two outs before succumbing to a Minnesota answer: an Alex Boxwell home run. Game tied.
Daniel Amaral drew a leadoff walk, stole second and took third on a throwing error — eventually scoring UCLA's go-ahead run on a groundout in the bottom of the second. Pettway held the 2-1 lead through his seven inning, four hit, four strikeout outing, handing the ball over to Kyle Mora.
Minnesota tied the game up against Mora with a double and RBI single to kick off the eighth and eventually send the game to extras. The Gophers rallied in the 10th, with Micah Coffey cashing in a leadoff single (advanced to scoring position on a sac bunt) to give Minnesota the 3-2 win at their regional. UCLA falls to the elimination bracket, where they'll play for their tourney lives against Gonzaga on Sunday.
Corvallis, Oregon Regional: Oregon State 14, Louisiana State 1
The Beavs dominated LSU, running rampant around the base paths throughout their 14-1 win. Nearly every member of Oregon State's strong lineup got in on the RBI action.
Adley Rutschman and Zak Taylor put up three each and Steven Kwan hit a two-run triple. Nick Madrigal hit a solo blast, his third of the year.
Luke Heimlich dealt seven innings of one-run ball.
The Beavs remain undefeated in their regional. They'll face the winner of a LSU, Northwestern State elimination bracket game Sunday night.
Stanford, California Regional: Stanford 1, CSU Fullerton 2
The Card and Titans found themselves in a pitcher's duel, locked down to the ninth inning in a 1-1 tie with CSU Fullerton pinch hitter Jace Chamberlain knocking a fastball over the right field fence for the 2-1 walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth.
Kris Bubic was stellar, dealing seven innings of one-run ball, but CSU Fullerton's Tommy Wilson kept pace. Will Matthiessen allowed the game-winner in an otherwise solid 1 2/3 innings of relief. The Cardinal will head to the elimination bracket, where they'll play Baylor on Sunday at noon PT.
