Five Pac-12 First-Round Selections Highlight 2018 MLB Draft

SAN FRANCISCO - Over three days of anticipation, 49 Pac-12 student-athletes were selected in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft with all 11 programs having at least one player drafted. ARIZONA led the Conference with eight picks followed by OREGON STATE with six.

Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal was first off the board with the No. 4 overall pick to the Chicago White Sox. Madrigal is the highest draft selection in Oregon State history, surpassing Michael Conforto who was picked 10th to the New York Mets in 2014. OSU had the most first-round selections in the Pac-12 with three- Trevor Larnach as the 20th overall pick to the Minnesota Twins and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Cadyn Grenier selected 37th overall to the Baltimore Orioles along with Madrigal. The three draftees bring Oregon State to 11 total first-round picks in school history.

STANFORD had two players selected in the first round and leads the NCAA with 25 first-round selections since the first MLB amateur draft took place in 1965. Pac-12 All-Conference First Team members, Nico Hoerner was drafted No. 24 by the Chicago Cubs and Kris Bubic went 40th overall to the Kansas City Royals.

According to NCAA research, three of the top seven and five of the top 20 programs with the most first-round draft picks are from the Pac-12. ARIZONA STATE tied for the second-most with Texas (21), USC tied at sixth with North Carolina (15), UCLA tied at 11th (12) and ARIZONA is tied at 14th (11).

The 49 total selections from the Conference of Champions were the third-most of any league.
