Roundup: Mike Hopkins gives Coach of the Year bonus back to fans in Starbucks gift cards

Washington

This was pretty sweet – Washington men’s basketball coach Mike Hopkins bought fans $15,000 worth of Starbucks gift cards with the bonus money he earned from being named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. He’ll be passing them out at Seattle’s U-Village on Thursday (he bought the gift cards in $12 increments).

Oregon

Oregon golfer Norman Xiong won the Fred Haskins Award (most outstanding men’s collegiate golfer), beating out Texas’ Doug Ghim and Ole Miss’ Braden Thornberry (Golf Channel). The sophomore has turned pro and will make his PGA Tour debut this summer.

UCLA

UCLA announced its 2018 athletic Hall of Fame class on Wednesday: Nikki Blue (women’s basketball), Kevin Chappell (men’s golf), Lynn “Buck” Compton (baseball/football), Larry Farmer (men’s basketball), Amanda Freed (softball), Jenny Johnson Jordan (women’s volleyball), Eric Lindroth (men’s water polo) and Stella Sampras Webster (women’s tennis).

Arizona State

California

Cal baseball first baseman Andrew Vaughn was named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, which goes to the top amateur baseball player in America.

Stanford

This is impressive — 14 members of the Stanford baseball team were recognized Thursday for their perfomances in the classrom this season (GoStanford.com). 

Arizona

Deandre Ayton says he is only working out for the Phoenix Suns (SB Nation). He also said, “I know I’m going No. 1,” which we headlined Wednesday.

USC

USC men’s basketball announced its 2018-19 non-conference schedule on Wednesday. The highlights are playing TCU at Staples Center on Dec. 7, meeting up with Oklahoma on Dec. 15 in Tulsa and the NABC Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City (Missouri State, Nebraska and Texas Tech are also invited).

Washington State

Former Coug and current Minnesota Vikings rookie Hercules Mata’afa will miss the 2018 season after tearing his ACL on Wednesday, Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports.

Colorado

Pat Rooney takes a look at the path for Team Colorado through The Basketball Tournament bracket. The winner of TBT gets $2 million, everybody else gets nada. The group of former Buffs are the No. 2 seed in the West region.

Utah

Christopher Kamrani notes that Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham wants quarterback Tyler Huntley to put on some weight because he puts himself in vulnerable spots going for the extra yard (the Utes would like to see him take fewer hits as well).

Oregon State

How ‘bout some more rowing love? Oregon State rower Alina Hagstrom was named CRCA All-Conference on Wednesday.
