August 09, 2018 | Tennis

BOULDER - Colorado tennis head coach Danielle Steinberg announced the signing of Vera Markovic on Thursday. Markovic is a native of Belgrade, Serbia, and puts CU's roster at seven heading into the fall in Steinberg's first season.

"We are thrilled for Vera to join our program," Steinberg said. "One of the main qualities we are looking for in our recruits is the desire to improve and the willingness to work for it. Vera exemplifies both as she has incredible work ethics and is determined to take her game to the next level. Beyond that, she is an excellent student and a terrific individual and I am certain she will have an immediate positive impact on our team."

Markovic has been a member of the Serbian U-18 National Team and was the national champion at the U-14 and U-18 levels. She won her first WTA point in 2017 and has been ranked as high as 943rd in the ITF world rankings with a career record of 10-8 in ITF junior singles matches. This past summer, she reached the third round of qualifying in the Nis tournament in Serbia.

She plans to major in political science at CU and is fluent in Serbian, Russian and English. Following her graduation, she plans to turn pro in tennis.
