Roundup: USC to name starting quarterback next week

Aug 22, 2018

USC

USC will name its starting quarterback next week, head coach Clay Helton told reporters Tuesday. Joey Kaufman has more in the link, noting that JT Daniels, Matt Fink and Jack Sears are splitting reps.

Oregon

Now it’s official – Oregon will open the 2022 football season against Georgia in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Should be a juicy matchup, but it would be nice to see an SEC school leave its region before bowl season a little more frequently (Auburn will come to UCLA in a decade or so, at least).

Stanford

Stanford running back Bryce Love and guard Nate Herbig were named AP preseason first-team All-Americans, it was announced Tuesday. Other first-teamers from the Pac-12 include Washington’s Myles Gaskin and Taylor Rapp and Utah’s Matt Gay and Mitch Wishnowsky

Arizona

Kyle Bonagura reports that Arizona men’s basketball forward Ira Lee was cited for driving under the influence. “The incident has been referred to the Dean of Students for review under the University’s student code of conduct, and the Athletics Department is reviewing the incident for team consequences,” a statement from Arizona Athletics said.

Washington State

Washington State football coach Mike Leach has set an eight-man rotation for receivers, with Theo Lawson noting that the Cougs could use up to 11 different receivers this year. The top eight for this year are as follows – Dezmon Patmon and Easop Winston at “Z” (outside), Tay Martin and Rodrick Fisher at “X” (outside), Renard Bell and Travell Harris at “H” (inside) and Kyle Sweet and Jamire Calvin at “Y” (inside).

Arizona State

Jeff Metcalfe lets us know that Arizona State athletics is partnering with Gila River Hotels & Casinos on a five-year deal to promote all Sun Devil teams. Now I know where to play craps when I go down to Tempe for an ASU event.

UCLA

UCLA women’s soccer forward Hailie Mace was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a last-second, game-winning goal for UCLA in a 1-0 win over Long Beach State in the season opener. Washington State’s Maddy Haro was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Washington’s Siena Ruelas was named Goalkeeper of the Week.

Utah

Here’s a Kurt Kragthorpe story on Utah kicker Matt Gay, noting that his long range (he has hit from 62 yards out in a scrimmage, and it could have been good from well beyond that) presents a bit of a dilemma for head coach Kyle Whittingham.

Oregon State

Check out the latest Oregon State football practice report, courtesy of Nick Daschel. The team is off to Bend for three days, culminating in a noon scrimmage Thursday at Summit High School that is open to the public. Head coach Jonathan Smith wants to simulate what a road trip will be like on his watch.

Washington

Adam Jude breaks down the Washington football depth chart on offense. Watch out for outside receiver Ty Jones and tight end Cade Otton, Jude opines.

California

Rusty Simmons features the Cal tight ends in his latest piece. It sounds like they may be featured more in the Golden Bear attack this year, with sixth-year senior TE Ray Hudson saying the team has run more two-TE sets in practice than it had the previous five seasons.

Colorado

Check out Ashley Adamson’s interview with Colorado quarterback Steven Montez, where the two discuss his quest to stay off his frozen-pizza diet, among more football-related topics.
